#Interesting music prg station: Xizang PBS

One of the most interesting stations i heard the previous years for its great music is Xizang PBS mandarin service.

As far as i can discover my mind it's at least 4 years since i have listened for more than usual their 4820 kHz kHz outlet especially their first hours of transmitting ie around 20UTC and then with great soft music

The program starts around 2000 with a two and half hours music program ie till 2230 the time they connect with CNR1 for the main news program of half hour. There are several other frequencies for reception as 5935 6050 7240 and 11860kHz as noticed by the following listing derived from Eibi : (condensed)

20-1800 except Tuesdays when 06-10 and 20-21 are off. I can verify the 20-21 only from my town.

7240 lacks 06-09 while 11860 is transmitted 03-09 except Tuesday which is 03-06 [covered by Yemen here ]

I have listened the station for several days on 6050 and 4820 while i was in my vacations in Chalkidiki with good signal, clear sound and free from local noise very good for armchair listening or dong something in parallel . 4820 instead has some static as in all lower bands. After returning back in my QTH I also tested 7240 with the same signal, clear from interference, but sometimes better reception than 6050 but with strong QRN level caused by local sources and sometimes QRM form unknown station. HCJB and ELWA are noticed in the EiBi list.

The music program consists of nearly all music kinds of China and presumably Singapore and Taiwan. It starts with easy listening music, piano melodies for one hour then turns into pop music and randomly with a few rocks or hiphop. On Tuesday music starts directly with the second part which is mainly pops and operas as noticed on 3.9 , Self commercials are aired around 3 times in random In general the program is very good for calming the listener even with the pops .

Although my knowledge in Chinese music is very limited i found that some of the regularly played songs are of pre 90s, 4-5 of them well known to me since my trip to SEA on 89 . A later use of Shazam with my FM recordings depicted me the fowling songs are aired via the service esp for August and older times as far as i remember :

-Zai hui shou- looking back by Jian Yu Heng , one of the most impressive Chinese songs of all times of 80s era (have that tape)

-Meiyou ren zhedao- none knows [my heart] Jonathan Lee /also seemingly one of the best chinese ballads of the pre90 period.

These two songs can be easily found in Youtube

-王傑 - 一場遊戲一場夢 /One game one dream -Wan Chieh (pre 80s)

-Remember everything - Wan Chieh

-Zhi shi ni bu dong wo de shin - Angus Tong (possibly ": this is what you dot understand my my heart ) These two singers are supposed to be of 70s era . These songs cannot be found in Youtube due to territory restrictions or because are removed

It is very posibly that the station plays also songs from two very famous females as Teresa Teng and Tracy Huang.

On September i have seen some changes on the program transferring the above songs in the first part ie as piano plays while the second part gets more into more recent pops one of the singers from VoChina talent show as identified by Shazam [*]

Stations ID uses the start of the music 夢裡不知身是客 ☆ Somewhere In My Dream or Nightingale as IDed by Shazam

Qi Yue Qi Ri Qing - Evonne Hsu/Du Li - Michelle & Vickie/ 樱花草 by Sweety/Ai Ya Ai Ya and Fa Dai- BY2/ 放生 by 范逸臣.[Van] / Everlasting Love by F.I.R/千年之恋 by 大山* /Three Kingdom Love - Tank / 天使的翅膀 by 安琥 /Separation Does Not Necessarily Break Up - Shan Ye /If I Told You Earlier - Shan Ye . This is the partial list of Sept 3th 100% sucess for Shazam with mostly female singers.

The next day Tuesday 4.9 signals were lower with effect of QRNM and unknown local sporadic noise , play list consisted with pops and many operas which Shazam cannot identify.

Qi Shi Dou Mei You- Aska Yang/多想留在你身边 by 刘增瞳 /小流星 by 汪苏泷 & 吴映洁 /忽而今夏 by 汪苏泷/ 狂浪生 by The Scallion are part of the play list for Wed 5.9 with 100% success Piano plays had 0% success

There are many so beautiful songs and melodies as the above in their firt two and half hours of program that i sugest anyone who likes nice eesy listening music or wants to become calmer, to tune as often as possible to this station. . I m sure hew will favorite this station in his radio!

MY relationship to Chinese music with history is included below:

I was very fond with music of Japan of pre60s a lovely melodic music. All 45RPM vinyl albums were attached with a documentation with lyrics in Japanese and the pentagram . This was the way i loved learning myself the language on mid 60s and sign these songs. However on early 70s my interest was totaly changed into listening R Beijing's among other station of Shortwaves. While in high school i used a Silver radio to listen and record Chinese operas Among the 15+ more songs recorded the following songs were the most noticed:

-Wo ai ni Zhong guo [I Love You China ] which seems as the second national anthem There are many versions today sung not only by Chinese bu also by Western tenors and a western philharmonic orchestra. I Like the beautiful video version of Tan Jing that describes Chna with a few snippets A contestant of the 'voice of China' started singing it very funny but the 4 jurors granted him with their best impressions (all available in Youtube)

-zai zian mama - the song of a new soldier who left his family. This song was part of my only one Chinese lessons study!

There are around 15 songs of that time recorded in one cassette in which i had a great interest as music . A Chinese friend of the time (1981) ,student in the Uni of Thesaloniki translated for me the second song (zaizian mama) and teached me the way of writing Chinese characters and some very basic Chinese . Radio Beijing offered me many souvenirs that time together with a guide of the language. Having communication with the Chinese Bokstore Guoji Shudian the same period subscribed to several magazines on China that included Chinese Literature. This is the only magazine not put in the junk after.

My favorite frequency was 7935 kHz heard nearly everyday especially the older times until they stopped transmissions or moved to another frequency .

The trip on SEA for business reasons on 89 and the purchase of a AIWA walkman in S'pore was an excellent idea on recording music from the countries we visited (HK , Phuket, Bangkok and Spore ). The recordings consisted of 45 Chinese songs from Spore and 7 form Hong Kong. Although the Chinese were very warm songs with rich melody the Cantonese songs of HK were totally 'flat' making me indifferent . There were songs of all kinds from easy listening pop and also rocks of the time tough the most were of 70-80s with more than half being very melodic easy listening or western type pops . However Malay music tough less beautiful but more emotional gained me much more than the Chinese or Thai and my interest in Chinese music has nearly abandoned although it deserves more chance .

This is Signal analysis drawing for 7240 kHz band for 23-8 between the stations start for around 1.5 hour including the 5 minutes of carrier . As you see both lines SNR and power levels are nearly steady at -75 (or S7 )with fading range of +/-10db

....and the drawing for 6050 on the same time ,using frequency diversity reception . Times in both charts are in Greek night time or 1950 to around 2130 .The black lines are the raw data for SNR signal that is noise plus signal to noise ratio that show on ho strong is per the local noise . The bottom line black line is the raw signal level plus a red color plot as 1 minute smooth. Itis clear that the signal was raising slowly across the time i contrast to 7240 that is nearly steady That is roughly 2 S levels up .
