Aside from having a good firewall and denying all outgoing traffic (from your computer) and limiting what can come in, and/or using Tor or something similar, it is a good idea to frequently delete these items from your internet browser to be safe:
cache
cookies
history
But then there are other items like Flash cookies that need to be deleted by visiting Adobe:
