Francis Isidore Gagelin

Father Francis Isidore Gagelin (Vietnamse: Francois-Isidore Gagelin Kính), was borned in 1799 at Montperreux, in the province of Besançon, France. He joined the Mission d'Etrangere de Paris and was went sent to Cochin-China in 1822 at the age 23. He was ordained to the priesthood upon his arrival in Vietnam and worked zealously until the outbreak of persecution.

When Emperor Minh Mang confered Mandarin titles on the missionaries, Father Gagelin was the imperial court's cartographer.

After the failed revolts with evidences pointed to Christian supports, Minh Mang ordered all priests be arrested. All escaped except Father Gagelin, who gave himself up to the mandarin of Bongson, (Vietnamese: Bãi Dâu Bồng Sơn), and was strangled on October 17, 1833. His grave was dugged up three days later so the Emperor could ensure that he did not resurrected, as he had preached. Father Gagelin was beatified in 1900.
