Batino Tree

Alstonia macrophylla

A tall slender evergreen tree with large elongated glossy leaves which usually forms a whole of three leaves, long thin tube-like fruits hang in large numbers from the. ends of the branches (in Winter)

Leaf: Up to a foot long, on a short stalk, pointed at the tip, shiny on top

Flower: small, white, tubular, with 5 petals, in loose clusters

Fruit: Slender pendulous bean-like in dense bunches. Initially green turns black when ripe

Season: The flowers appear from July to September. The fruits ripen from January to March.

Range/habitat: Exotic, Malay peninsula, Indonesia. Naturalized in India

Trivia and notes: There were two of these trees in Rabindra Sarobar, one died in cyclone. From the other, a number of seedling are growing naturally.
