Alleys and Bylanes

There are quite a few roads that connects to the main road that that we covered in the north east area. From the Dhakuria gate, there is a road that goes towards the Southern Avenue. On the way you will find Anderson club. Here, on the right hand side you will find a Sausage Tree, a native of Africa.

Also there are large Debdaru/Ashoke trees. In Hindi, Saraca asoca is called Sita Ashoke from mythology of Ramayana. Many gardens have another variety of this tree with weeping branches (called var pendula). There is another rare variety of this tree with miniature leaves

The next bifurcation is between the Anderson lake and Lotus pond. You will find a level crossing on the road after 30 steps or so. From there, another 40 steps will take you near an Alexandrian laurel tree (Calophyllum inophyllum, Sultan(a) Champa in both Bengali and Hindi), which will be on you right close to the compound wall of Andersen lake.

After 35 steps further, on you left there is a Moulmein Rosewood (Millettia peguensis) with pinnate leaf of 3 pairs or so with a terminal leaflet. In April this tree produces mauve colored flowers.

On your right there is a Batino tree (Alstonia macrophylla) [update: this tree had died in Amphan super cyclone]. This tree is there in  south-west section also and it is [wrongly] labelled as soap tree there.

After 25 steps on you left you will find a Gular/Joggi Dumur tree (Ficus racemosa) Tree. Related to more common and almost weedy Dumur, this species has smaller and smooth leaves.

After 15 steps from Gular, on your left there is Akashneem tree (Millingtonia hortensis) also known as Tree Jasmine and Indian Cork Tree. From the names you can make out it has leaves like neem (actually twice feathered, unlike neem which is feathered), flowers like Jasmine and a cork-like bark.

Another 36 steps will take you near a Palaash tree which will be on you right atop a circular pedestal. We covered this tree in south west section. From here the road turns left keeping Najrun Mancha on your right. After some distance you will find a tree labelled as white sirish, which is wrong this tree (at least the present one) is actually Kassod (Cassia siamea)

The next bifurcation is after the lotus pond. Take the road keeping the lotus pond on your right. After a while this will merge with another road. Take a left turn and walk along the footpath on the left. After 25 steps from here on your left there will be a large rain tree the trunk almost touching the footpath. Continue another 12 steps and on you left, some 10 feet inside the park, you will find  Kossam/Kusum tree (Schleichera oleosa). There is another tree 22 steps ahead (photo below). An important forest tree of mostly Central India, this tree adds to the spring color by its red leaves. More
