About the "old" TIEC Listserv

Note: As of December 2019, Yahoo Groups will be deleting all user created/uploaded content, including message archives.

Note: The TIEC listserv largely remains as an archive, however it is still in use. Most of the current online activity of the TIEC is contained within a private Facebook group. Please see the announcement about the listserve here [link]. The following remains as a record of what the listserv is.

-------------------------------------------------------

What does the group listserv have to offer members? A growing database and files section of communicative games and activities and little gems of advice on everything from working with handouts to handling kindergarten ankle-biters. Almost all of the files are available as HTML or TXT files making them easily accessible even from your slow backwoods school's 64k ISDN connection. Apart from the useful ideas and materials for use in class, there is also information and links to help you get the most out of living in Tokachi. As of September the listserv will be 6 years old, and as time goes by its usefulness grows as each member adds their own little gems to the group.

You can visit the group on the web at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tiec2004/ and read the group messages without subscribing. However, only those subscribed to the listserv can post messages, access the group files, group databases, group photos and other goodies. Accessing group functions other than the mailing list require that you have a Yahoo.com account.

Privacy Concerns

As mentioned above, the tiec2004 listserv message archive is public. Let me explain what that means. First it means that anyone can access and read your messages posted/sent to the tiec2004 Yahoo group.

Your e-mail addresses are kept safe however any other information that you post will be made available to the whole wide world. Let's keep it professional.

How would one know if the message archive was public or not? Yahoo tells you when you do a search for and find the group.

How do you tell which parts of the teic2004 are public? They are click-able.

On the front page, if you scroll down you will see that the message archives are indeed viewable even if you are not singed in to Yahoo.

How do you tell if your address is safe or not? It's hidden after the @.

This is the current state of the tiec2004 Yahoo group. There will be a discussion and a vote on whether to make the message archives private or not at the 2010 TIEC Tokachi Orientation and Welcome Gathering (8/28 - 8/29) to be held at Iwanai. Watch the listserv for details. Until then if you have any question feel free to ask.

Although we invite everyone to be active members of the community, the level of your involvement is, of course, your choice. Some folks just show up for the official TIEC gatherings, others we may see once and then they disappear into their town, and yet others are social maniacs and just can’t get enough. We are simply a community of friends that is available to you and hopefully make your time in Japan more memorable. The folks here are all great and it is a very welcoming and supportive atmosphere.
