Tholian Holdfast

Tholian Holdfast

The Tholians are a crystalline based insectoid race, not native to the Milky Way. Their home world was a place of intense heat, pressure, and chemical clouds, where life evolved from inorganic crystals. The Tholian race as a result requires extreme life support to survive, and has a biology incompatible with most other lifeforms. However it has left them with the unique ability to interfact directly with technology, as their own nueral systems resemble that of computers and capable of generating and receiving complex Electromagnetic fields. In addition, Tholians are strong, highly intelligent, and long lived. The Tholian rise of civilization was not entirely natural. Tholian history records that in the distant past their ancestors were uplifted as slaves by a powerful but mysterious race, the Shedai, which appears to have held territory across the entire local galactic group. The Tholians turned this race's own technology against them, wiping them out in the Tholian home galaxy of M81. From the ruins of the Tholian Will emerged, going on to conquer nearly all of their home galaxy. However with power came great arrogance, and the Tholians made the same mistake as their progenitors, uplifting slave races to serve them and control races in environments the Tholians cannot enter safely. One of these races, the Seltorians, slipped the Tholian controls and rose up in revolt, systematically destroying the Tholian Will.

The Tholians that survived the Seltorian Holocaust did so by fleeing their own galaxy. Refugee fleets set out all over, and the fates of most are unknown. one of the largest groups, the inhabitants of a small Dyson sphere, managed to rescue their entire society by using a Shedai transportation device to move the entire solar system, Dyson Sphere and all, to the Milky Way. The Tholians arrived in a largely abandoned area of the galaxy, near the Taurus Reach, a former Shedai stronghold. The region was claimed by the Fledgling Klingon Empire, but was an empty region with few native civilizations. The Tholians rapidly moved to secure their new territory, bringing them into direct conflict with the Klingon Empire.

Territorial Claims

The Tholians hold onto their territory with iron claws, but are rarely expansionary. Their territory covers several hundred parsecs, mostly of barren territory of little interest to anyone except for their resources. however it sits right across what would be several very lucrative trading route to several more attractive regions, which has led to frequent conflicts. The heart of the Holdfast is the Dyson Sphere, renamed Tholia in memory of their lost home, which serves as homeworld and capitol. The Sphere is small, built around a Brown Dwarf which has been artificially ignited and controlled. The interior has never been seen by a non-tholian, but is believed to be made over into the image of their lost homeworld, with Crystal forests and an entire ecosystem supporting a population of trillions. The Sphere also houses their primary shipyards. The Sphere is constantly guarded by a strong fleet, as the klingon's found out in the early 23nd century when one of their extermination efforts managed to reach the Sphere and inflict damage to it before being utterly destroyed. Spread across the Holdfast are a great many outposts and bases, military bases and resource colonies constructed to support the Dyson sphere's population, and it's defenses. The Tholians have few planet based facilities, as none of the worlds in their territory are suited to their life support needs, or good prospects for Tholiaforming. Those few planetary outposts they do have are largely on airless worlds, where large dome and underground cities can be constructed. A handful of worlds in their territory possess native civilizations, most very primitive. The Tholians have chosen to isolate these systems and observe them. to what ends is unknown. The Xenophobic Tholians are unlikely to see these races as allies, or to repeat the mistakes of their ancestors, but they seem to have adopted a hands off policy regarding those races, even to the point of defending those worlds against invasion.

Government

The Tholian Government is called the Tholian Assembly. This body is massive, and intricately structured into tiers and sections, the exact nature of which is largely unknown to non-tholians. Because Tholians can communicate by EM fields and direct contact, the Assembly operates as a pseudo-hive mind, debates occurring at the speed of thought across the whole. The Assembly selects representatives to relay its decisions to across the holdfast, apparently sacrificing speed for security and to inform regional leadership face to face.

Military Forces

The Tholian Military is called the "Might", and its primary directive is the defense of the Holdfast. Operating out of asteroid bases and with a focus on mobile defense, the Might will confront and ward off any incursion into Tholian territory. It's structure is not fully understood, but they appear to use a structure similar to most other races, with equivalents of Admirals, Captains, non-commissioned, officers, and so on. however this organization seems to be fluid when viewed by outsiders, with individuals sometimes ceding authority to seemingly lower ranking individuals, suggesting that it has unknown rules and limits unknown to outsiders. When the Holdfast was first established, the Might had a limited number of vessels, and infrastructure for expansion ofthe fleet was limited. which led to the development of several new classes based on easily produced components. as the Holdfast grew and expanded, the ability to construct classes from their home galaxy became a priority, and in the mid 23rd century new shipyards were built to construct them. To the powers of the Milky Way, these designs appeared to be new, advanced designs, meant to counter the wave of advanced ships being built by the Alpha and Beta Quadrant races.

Interstellar Relations

Klingon Empire - The Tholians biggest threat over the centuries has been the Klingons, which see the Holdfast as a block to the Empire's expansion along its Rimward borders. The Klingons have invaded the Holdfast several times every century since the Tholians arrived in the Milky Way. Each time the Empire has been repulsed, usually with heavy losses. After the Praxis Explosion crippeld the Empire, plans for a new invasion have been put on hold, but several Great Houses have begun eyeing Tholian territory and its resources, which may lead to an unwanted war the Empire can ill afford.

United Federation of Planets - the UFP has butted head frequently with the Tholians in border clashes, but has managed to avoid outright war on several occasions. alone of the Milky Way powers, the Federation has managed to employ diplomacy to actually settle disputes with the Holdfast. This has not however managed to resolve tensions around the Taurus Reach, Which the Federation and klingons have both colonized in the late 23rd century, and which holds a great many Shedai artifacts the Tholians desire to keep out of the hands of other races. this region may prove to be a trigger point for a war between the Tholians and Federation, perhaps even a three way conflict involving the Klingons as well, despite the Praxis Peace treaty.

Tholian Survivors in other Locations

The Tholian Will in M81 was a massive entity, and a large number of Refugee groups fled the galaxy during the Seltorian uprising. most of these were little more than a few warships escorting flotilla's of transports, though some larger self sufficient fleets fled as well near the end. The group that would become the Holdfast knew about several of these, but could not track them far even before making their own journey. Several headed to Andromeda and Triangulum, and at least one fleet set out towards the milky way, and if it survives the journey, may find its way to the Magellanic Clouds. Entry into the Milky Way is considered unlikely by the Holdfast due to the Galactic Barrier, but the Holdfast continues to keep vigil for stragglers from the home galaxy.

House rules and Weaponry

Pulsers - As per the Rules in Full Thrust Fleet Book 2, Pulsers are variable range weapons with long range, medium range, and short range settings. At the beginning of the game, select which setting each Pulser on a ship will use, and that will be its setting for the entire game. Pulser settings cannot be changed during a game, so select carefully. In most games the medium or long range settings will be preferable, with Tholian vessels relying on their Beam 1 Arrays and Pulse Torpedoes for close in firepower. In the setting, Pulsers on Tholian vessels represent variable mode compact Pulse Cannons, which fire dense packets of High Energy Plasma, which act more like explosives when they impact.

Beam 1 Arrays - These follow all the standard Full Thrust rules for Beam Arrays, including their ability to be used as an improvised Point Defense System. In the Setting, the Beam Arrays on Tholian ships represent defensive Phaser systems used for both short range attacks against enemy ships, and for defense against slower moving projectile attacks.

Pulse Torpedoes - These follow all the standard rules from Full Thrust. In the setting, Pulse Torpedoes on Tholian vessels represent Photon Torpedo systems, mass drivers which fire firing semi-guided fast moving antimatter warheads at an opponent.

Mine Layers - These weapons use all the standard rules from Full Thrust. Minelayers represent Tholian web-generator systems, which for the sake of gameplay, weave free floating energy webs which entangle and damage ships which pass through them. Minelayers are a tricky system, and may take some experimenting to find methods of use that work for the player.

Tholian Ship Classes

(of the 23rd and early 24th Century)

Exodus Fleet

Designed after their sudden arrival in the milky Way Galaxy, these designs represent the Tholian's rush to develop industry and a fleet to defend their territory. Making use of common structural and systems components, the Exodus Fleet could be built rapidly with a smaller Industrial base. Given the production capabilities of a Dyson Sphere, even one not built as a industrial center, this allowed the Tholian's to build a massive fleet very rapidly. As their Infrastructure expanded with asteroid based mines, foundries, and shipyards, supporting this extensive fleet became even easier, no longer requiring vessels return to the Dyson Sphere yards for repairs, and distributing production across the Holdfast to prevent any single blow from crippling the defense. Due to the use of swarms of light vessels early in the Tholian wars of defense, the Exodus Fleet developed a different doctrine than the home galaxy forces, more reliant on rapid hit and run strikes, taking advantage of their vessels high speeds and maneuverability. As such, even the heavier vessels were designed with the same speed and agility, a fact which often places opponents used to slower less agile capital ships off guard.

Tholian Patrol Corvette (PC) The Patrol Corvette was a standard security and enforcement vessel in the Tholian home galaxy, and with the shift to the Milky way, it's simple design and ease of construction it has become the standard border patrol unit for the Tholian Might. During the early days of the Holdfast the Patrol Corvette formed the bulk of the Tholian naval forces, produced en-mass by the automated facilities on the Dyson Sphere and deployed in swarms against invading forces. With the expansion of production and the fleet, the Patrol Corvette has been moved away from front line use, but it continues to serve. Patrol Corvettes secure the borders of the Holdfast against it's enemies, and defend its facilities.Type: FrigateNPV: 80CPV: 63Mass: 21Thrust: 6 AdvancedFTLFCHull: 4 (4 row, 2 crew factors)1x Pulser (F)1x Beam Array 1 (6 arc)Minelayer (3 Mines)

Tholian Destroyer (DD) The Tholian Destroyer was one of the first classes developed in the Milky Way Galaxy, a modification of the Patrol Corvette design to increase it's firepower and durability. Equipped with the same energy weaponry as the patrol corvette, it was also equipped with a Photon Torpedo system copied from Klingon sources, giving it strong firepower. The similarity of the Destroyer to the Patrol Corvette has resulted in the destruction of many starships, which underestimated the vessel and what it was capable of. Although supplanted by the 'Neo-tholian' vessels, Destroyers remain one of the most common vessels in the Tholian fleet, after the Patrol Corvette, and the lightest frontline vessel the Tholians deploy.Type: DestroyerMass:31NPV: 117CPV: 96Thrust: 6 AdvancedFTLHull: 6 (4 row, 2 crew factors)FC1x Pulser (F)1x Beam Array 1 (6 arc)1x Pulse Torpedo (F)Minelayer (3 Mines)

Tholian War Cruiser (CW) The War Cruiser was designed by the Holdfast to provide a simple to build capital ship early in their Milky Way history, meant to counter the Klingon warships of the time. effectively an enlarged Destroyer hull, the War Cruiser focused on enhancement of close range firepower, installing an additional photon torpedo system for a devastating strike ability. War Cruisers continue to be be built, although they have been eclipsed by newer vessels. It is not uncommon to see a War Cruiser operating as a command vessel for a Destroyer group, or a pair escorting a heavier vessel. Many older hulls have been reassigned to border patrol duties, giving heavier firepower to squadrons of Patrol Corvettes.Type: Light CruiserNPV: 187CPV: 162Mass: 51Thrust: 6 AdvancedFTLHull: 12 (4 row, 3 crew factors)1x Fire Control1x Pulser (F)1x Beam 1 (6 arc)2x Pulse Torpedo (2x F)Minelayer (5 Mines)

Tholian Heavy Cruiser/Command Cruiser (CA)late in the 22nd century, faced with the threat of more powerful Klingon warships, and of the nearby Federation, a design more powerful than the War Cruiser was required to ensure the safety of the Holdfast. The Heavy Cruiser began as an improved War Cruiser design, but the need for greater firepower pushed the design to a new hull form, one which provided more room for weapons systems. Designed for rapid slashing strikes in support of lighter vessels, speed was emphasized over durability and improved targeting. As the design rarely operates without support from a unit of War Cruisers or Destroyers, the Designation 'Command Cruiser' has been attached to it by intelligence files. Tholian Dreadnought (DN)The Largest and Toughest warship the Tholian Might operated prior to the deployment of the 'Neo-Tholian' fleet, the Dreadnought was first deployed in the late 22nd century alongside the Heavy Cruiser. One of the fastest capital ships of its class, the Dreadnought was designed to operate in formation with lighter Tholian vessels, lending its intense firepower to their rapid strikes. With the advent of the Neo-Tholian fleet production of Dreadnoughts appear to have halted, although many continue to serve in the Tholian Might.Type: Light BattleshipNPV: 361CPV: 353Mass: 91Thrust: 6 AdvancedFTLHull: 20 (4 row, 5 crew factors)3x Fire Control7x Pulser (F)3x Beam 1 (6 arc)2x Pulse Torpedo (F)Minelayer (5 Mines)

Neo-Tholian Fleet

The Neo-Tholian Fleet is so named by non-Tholian sources, due to the apparently new and more advanced designs that the Holdfast deployed in the late 23rd century. In actuality these vessels are modifications of designs used by the Tholians in their Home Galaxy before the Seltorian uprising. A few such vessels came with the Tholians to the Milky Way, but were lost to attrition early in the Holdfast's defense. These vessels required resources and production capabilities the Holdfast could not afford to spare until the late 23rd century. Currently, the Neo-tholian fleet makes up only a tenth of the entire Tholian Might, but increasingly production has been turned over to Neo-Tholian vessels. It is likely the Holdfast intends to gradually replace all their front line forces with Neo-tholian ships, relegating their older post-exodus designs solely to border patrol duties.

Support Infrastructure

Tholian Asteroid Base:

Unwilling (or unable) to devote precious resources to building large free floating space stations, the Tholian Holdfast instead makes use of base facilities built into the ubiquitous asteroids of stellar systems. The thick layer of rock and metal around the base facilities give these stations durability as well as helping to hide their locations from enemy forces. Individually these stations are small, however their ease of construction allow the Tholians to build multiples in a system, often clustered together.

Miniatures Sources

The Vessels on this page have been written to use the Starline 2400 series of miniatures by Amarillo Design Bureau. This line of 1/3788th scale miniatures is high quality and is currently the only one that supplies a variety of high quality Tholian ship figures in a game friendly scale. The new Starline 2500 series miniatures, which uses a slightly larger scale, currently does not have many Tholian figures. There are no figures for the Asteroid base currently, so scratch building is recommended. Litko's Space Shield Tokens are an ideal choice for use as mine counters, as their appearance resemble the energy webs used by the Tholians in the show and Star Fleet Battles. While a mine counter can be anything of the right size, the Litko tokens add aesthetic aspects to make the gameplay feel more 'Tholian'.
