There are two major studies about the projected future of AMO physics in the past decade.

First, a study from The National Academies (USA) “Controlling the Quantum World – The Science of Atoms, Molecules, and Photons” by the Committee on AMO 2010, Board on Physics and Astronomy, Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences, National Research Council of the National Academies, The National Academies Press, Washington, D.C., USA, http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=11705&page=R1.

Second, theoretical AMO physics was discussed on the Workshop (8/2011) “Theoretical-Atomic-Molecular-Optical Physics: Recent Developments and a Vision for the Future” that was organized by Dörte Blume (Washington State University), Klaus Bartschat (Drake University), Carlton Caves (University of New Mexico), and Ivan Deutsch (University of New Mexico) and held August 18 and 19, 2011 at the National Science Foundation (NSF), Arlington, Virginia, USA. The final report "Theoretical Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics: Recent Developments and a Vision for the Future" was produced: http://panda.unm.edu/TAMOP/TAMOP_Report_Final.pdf.
