Stowell House
Harpers Ferry, WV 1908 American 4-Square Wizard Block Home and Related Properties
The Kaplon-Stowell House was built by Abraham Kaplon for his Jewish family in 1908. Abe ran the main multi-story department store in down-town Harpers Ferry, WV which even had an elevator! He ordered the house building parts (including the Wizard Block Machine) from Sears & Roebuck.
In the 1970s the Kaplon's leased the rusticated concrete block house to the Stowell family, who bought it, lived in it, and made it into an Art & Antique Gallery, B&B, Architecture Office, and built an award-winning Montessori School in the back yard. The house was also established officially with a town business license as the American Middle-Class Museum. The house was sold to new owners circa 2017.
