The UK Government outlines plans for UK’s digital transition.

On 16 June 2009 the report by Lord Carter, the Minister for technology, communications and broadcasting titled “Digital Britain - final report”, Chapter 3b “Radio: going digital” proposes that by 2015 all Government and commercial radio stations should have moved from AM and FM onto the new DAB VHF network.

The British Government has said that by the end of 2013 all new cars with radios must have DAB digital radios included.

The final approval for the switch over will depend on DAB having a similar coverage to FM, DAB signals covering 90% of the population and major roads, the cost of DAB radios must be less than £20 and half of the population should be listening to DAB.

In 2009 the UK has 9 million DAB digital radios in cars and homes, 32% of adults have a DAB radio in their home.

Moving existing radio stations to DAB and off 88 – 109 MHz would free the FM band from powerful broadcasters that occupy frequencies across large geographic areas.

A new radio service of ultra local FM broadcast stations, local community and local commercial stations could be established. Since these would be local coverage stations it means that more stations will be able to be established on FM than is the case with today’s FM broadcast system and regulations.

Moving the Government and commercial broadcasters to DAB will allow citizens to become more involved with radio broadcasting than has previously been possible.

South Korea developed a digital transmission system for radio, TV and datacasting.

DMB in South Korea provides 7 TV channels, 12 radio channels and 8 data channels on VHF 180 MHz – 186 MHz and 204 MHz – 210 MHz. These are broadcast on six multiplexes which is the same technique used by DAB digital radio broadcasters.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Multimedia_Broadcasting

In 2001 Korea looked at why DAB was a commercial failure in Europe and why it had not replaced FM and concluded that DAB did not offer anything more than was available on FM radio.

Korea decided to develop a digital transmission system that added video with a 7 inch screen to the radio and launched the world’s first mobile TV broadcasts.

ISDB Digital radio broadcasts texts, still pictures, simple moving images and high-quality sound and music programs.

On 10 October 2003 test transmissions in Digital radio began. ISDB started in December 2003.

Analog TV will end in Japan on 24 July 2011 and this will open the VHF frequency band 170 MHz – 222 MHz for ISDB-Tmm (Terrestrial mobile multi-media) expansion of Digital radio with with video coding standard MPEG-4 AVC /H.264 broadcasting in Japan.

Digital FM radio started in the USA using a system called In-Band On-Channel (IBOC).

IBOC digital HD radio is used on normal AM broadcast frequencies 540 kHz to 1700 kHz and on normal VHF FM broadcast frequencies 88 MHz to 108 MHz.

DRM is a different digital coding system compared to the DAB digital coding system.

DAB occupies a wide bandwidth of 1.536 MHz which is suitable on the higher VHF band (174 MHz and above in Australia).

DRM occupies a narrow bandwidth of 10 kHz which is suitable for the lower VHF bands but especially suitable for Long Wave radio, Medium Wave radio and for worldwide broadcasting on Short Wave radio.

VHF radio broadcasts using the DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) broadcasting standard on VHF are currently between 30000 kHz and 60000 kHz (30 MHz to 60 MHz).

How to start a radio station in Somalia.

During the building of a radio station Somalia students go “on the air” during test transmissions.

The beginning of the first radio station in North East Somalia (now known as the Puntland State of Somalia).

Radio Free Somalia (“Free for all to use”, known later as Radio Galkayo) started with short wave radio test transmissions in July 1993 using a power of 80 Watts AM on 7.500 MHz short wave.

Official broadcasting started on the 18th August 1993 when Radio Free Somalia (Radio Galkayo) became the first radio broadcast station in North East Somalia.

The photo shows the first test transmissions in July 1993 when there were no wall decorations and staff training was underway.

The radio station and training were at the Galkayo Police station, Galkayo, North East Somalia (North East Somalia became the Puntland State of Somalia on the 1st August 1998).
