Australia AM stereo radio stations before 2009.

This is a list of stations that did broadcast in STEREO AM but in 2009 none are broadcasting in AM STEREO.

This list of Australian Radio AM STEREO broadcast stations may still be appearing because they are still licensed to broadcast in AM STEREO if they wanted to.

531 kHz 3GG AM stereo, Warragul, VIC, Australia. (5 August 2009 Radio 3GG advised 3GG hasn’t been transmitting in STEREO for some years).

612 kHz 4QR AM stereo, Brisbane, QLD, Australia.

693 kHz 3AW AM stereo, Melbourne, VIC, Australia. (3 August 2009 Radio 3AW advised 3AW is not broadcasting in AM STEREO as there are a very limited number of receivers still in the market and the AM STEREO audio processing does impact on the overall quality for the majority of listeners. We phased out AM STEREO some time ago now. We are currently broadcasting in stereo on digital radio).

702 kHz 2BL AM stereo, Sydney, N.S.W, Australia. (3 August 2009 Radio 2BL advised they are not broadcasting in AM stereo).

864 kHz 4GR AM stereo, Toowoomba, QLD, Australia.

882 kHz 6PR AM stereo, Perth, QLD, Australia.

927 kHz 3UZ AM stereo, Melbourne, VIC, Australia. (3 August 2009 Radio 3UZ advised we do not broadcast in AM STEREO, we utilize analogue AM and Digital Radio DAB+ technology)

936 kHz 7ZR AM stereo, Hobart, TAS, Australia.

954 kHz 2UE AM stereo, Sydney, N.S.W, Australia.

1008 kHz 4TAB AM stereo, Brisbane, QLD, Australia. (4 August 2009 Radio 4TAB advised we no longer support AM STEREO- we flogged a dead horse for 20 years. Digital Radio is now the thing. Great stereo quality and pictures as well (if you have a radio with the picture display screen not just a dial display screen)

1053 kHz 2CA AM stereo, Canberra, A.C.T, Australia (3 August 2009 Radio 2CA advised we are not currently broadcasting AM STEREO but 2CA is streaming stereo audio on the Internet)

1017 kHz 2KY AM stereo, Sydney, N.S.W, Australia. (4 August 2009 Radio 2KY. Sky Sports Radio no longer transmits in AM STEREO and has not done so for a long time. To my knowledge no other station is transmitting AM stereo in Sydney. The way to check on an AM STEREO receiver is to see if a pilot tone is detected. Digital radio is the new standard which is currently broadcasting on channel 9a. Digital radio receivers are currently available).

1116 kHz 3AK AM stereo, Melbourne, VIC, Australia.

1143 kHz 2HD AM stereo, Newcastle, N.S.W, Australia.

1170 kHz 2CH AM stereo, Sydney, N.S.W, Australia. (3 August 2009 Radio 2CH advised we do not currently broadcast in AM STEREO however we are in stereo on the all new digital radio).

1206 kHz 2CC AM stereo, Canberra, A.C.T, Australia

1242 kHz 3GV AM stereo, Sale, VIC, Australia.

1242 kHz 4AK AM stereo, Oakey, QLD, Australia.

1278 kHz 3EE AM stereo, Melbourne, VIC, Australia. (5 August 2009 Radio 3EE I believe that there are no longer any stations in Melbourne broadcasting AM STEREO. We have not broadcast in stereo on either 693 kHz or 1278 kHz for several years).

1323 kHz 5DN AM stereo, Adelaide, S.A, Australia.

1368 kHz 2GN AM stereo, Goulburn, N.S.W, Australia.

1377 kHz 3MP AM stereo, Melbourne, VIC, Australia.

1503 kHz 2BS AM stereo, Bathurst, N.S.W, Australia. (3 August 2009 Radio 3BS advised we switched off AM STEREO about 6 years ago 2003)

Stereo AM radio receiver decoder board.

This $35 DQAM AM Stereo Decoder Board will turn your mono AM medium wave radio into a stereo AM radio receiver.

This board accepts the signal from the IF of a receiver (450 or 455 KHz) and decodes AM stereo medium wave broadcasts.

For Amateur radio operators who love experimenting with AM you can build your own AM STEREO transmitter and receiver. Sam Voron recalls hearing and enjoying the improved audio quality of AM STEREO in Sydney, Australia during the demonstration of an AM STEREO receiver while listening to Radio 2UE with and without stereo.

See 17.1 (Amateur radio STEREO AM in the radio communication station section).

1386 kHz TJH Systems, Wollongong, N.S.W., Australia DRM trial broadcasts using 1kW from a Broadcast Electronics transmitter. The 24 hour DRM Medium Wave broadcasts started in May 2006. The trial has ended.

A person signing an online Digital radio petition claims "the ACMA enforces an Australian radio system worse than soviet Russia" in a call to remove the ban on new entries into Digital radio. People say that DAB digital radio is a copy of the "big players" that are already on AM radio and FM radio and that DAB is not in rural areas or towns like Wollongong who want to use DRM but are currently blocked by the Australian ban on new entries into Digital radio.

Another person writes “De-regulate Australian radio and television now and open up the AM, FM and new DRM digital signals and scrap wide screen TV and give back the 30 television free to air signals wide screen stole from every Australian consumer."

See DRM in Australia and Australian DRM trial on 3.2 (b) Shortwave Digital radio for local broadcasting.

Starting a radio station in Somalia.

To build a radio station you need to find the best broadcasting location.

Finding the best location for the first radio station in North East Somalia.

The beginning of Radio Free Somalia (“free for everyone to use”, know later as Radio Galkayo).

In July 1993 Sam Voron selected Galkayo for establishing the first radio station in North East Somalia (known from the 1st August 1998 as the Puntland State of Somalia) because it had a 30 metre tower that was ideal for broadcasting and Galkayo is located at a central broadcasting location midway between the populated centres of Bosasso to the north and Mogadishu to the south.

As soon as Sam Voron saw the tower he said this is it and the car stopped but people said it’s not possible because that is the Police station.

Governor Abdirahman Ali Bihi, the Governor of Galkayo happened to be walking by and asked what was happening.

When he learned that two volunteers from Australia; Sam Voron from Sydney and Abdikarim Nur Mohamud from Melbourne wanted to establish a radio station he immediately said welcome the tower is yours.

The photo shows Galkayo, North East Somalia with the Galkayo Police station antenna tower without antennas and the street electricity poles without electricity wires in July 1993.
