Digging for Sound

Art Transmission is a project by sound artist Kate Chapman to make sound art for the airwaves on BRFM Bridge radio through The Daniel Monday Night Community Show. Kate worked with members of the Society from both sites to create sounds from their plots. You can hear the final result 'Digging for Sound' at: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVQqwRHcZFYAWiU9vKZu4mL3w0QJtVDc8

The programme includes many of the fascinating noises that can be heard at the sites, including – the boot on the spade, wind blowing through trees, filling a watering can and a teaspoon stirring a mug of tea. Digging for Sound also features members talking about 'Allotmenteering'.

Two ecological projects are currently underway at our Medway Road site.

On a plot that had become virtually unusable, due to misuse in the past, work has been carried out to gradually turn it into an apiary to encourage bees. The plot was cleared of rubbish and levelled to make an area that will eventually house up to six hives. A few trees and shrubs have been planted along with the scattering of a pollinating mix and wild flower mix of seeds.

Working in conjunction with The Medway Bee Keeping Association it is hoped that two hives will be on site shortly followed by four more in the spring.

Dave's project

On another part of the Medway Road site that is unusable, being prone to flooding, plans are afoot to create a pond and wildlife habitat. Apart from a pond the area will eventually have trees such as Willow and other water loving varieties as well as shrubs, plants and bulbs designed to attract all forms of insects and wildlife. Along side hedgehog rests and bird boxes it is hoped to introduce ducks to the pond and there are discussions currently taking place about the possibility of homing rescued wildlife animals.

The whole area will have hedging around it as protection and for safety.

The digger has been in and a start is made

8 of the 9 species of hedging whips have arrived. The Elders should be here within days. It is hoped to have them, as well as the Apiary hedge and duck house no.1, in place by early December.

English Bluebells and Snowdrop bulbs are also on the way.

The Stumpery

Yes, now a third project on the Medway Road site. To make further use of the area that is unsuitable for allotments a Stumpery is planned. The stumps have already been sourced from an orchard that is being grubbed out.
