N2 Northern Ireland (Omagh) - Monaghan - Dublin

Increasing from 0 at the border with Northern Ireland (A5) to 733 at the M2 north of Ashbourne.

N3 Ballyshannon ( - Enniskillen) - Cavan - Dublin

Sections:

1 Ballyshannon - Northern Ireland (A46 Enniskillen)

Increasing from 779 at the old N15 in Ballyshannon to 819 at the border with Northern Ireland.

This section was originally the R230 and was upgraded to N3 only in 1994.

Unlike other cases (e.g. the N5) the new section did not get mielage from 1000.

2 Northern Ireland (A509 Enniskillen) - Cavan - Dublin

Increasing from 0 at the border with Northern Ireland to 762 at the M50 in Dublin.

N4 Sligo - Dublin

Increasing from 10 at Sligo to 1230 at Lucan.

The road was replaced by an expressway between SLigo and Collooney, which is about a mile shorter than the old route. Therefore the mileage now starts at 10.

There is still a sign for 1220 west of Lucan.

N5 Westport - Longford

Sections:

1 Westport - Castlebar

Increasing from 1000 at the N59 in Westport to 1100 west of Castlebar.

This section was the N60 until 1995. After it was changed to N5, mileage from 1000 was assigned to avoid duplication.

2 Castlebar - Longford

Increasing from 0 west of Castlebar to 726 at the N4 Longford bypass.

N6 Galway bypass

Increasing from 0 at the N59 and R338 in Galway to 45 at the end of the N6 exprssway and the N67.

Originally the N6 continued via what is now the N67 and the R446 to Kinnegad. It was almost 95 miles long, and the mileage sign 950 still existed at the junction of the former N4 and N6 in Kinnegad in 2009.

The only mileage sign left on the N6 was removed probably around 2010. There are still some signs left on the downgraded parts (R446).

N10 Knocktopher - Kilkenny

Increasing from 0.0 at the old N9 in Knocktopher to 120 at Kilkenny.

N11 Wexford - Dublin

Increasing from 0 at the N25 to about 260 near Gorey.

Most of the road has been replaced by the motorway M11 and expressway N11 with km signs.

N12 Monaghan - Northern Ireland (Armagh)

Increasing from 0 at the N2 Monaghan bypass to 44 at the border with Northern Ireland (A3).

N13 Ballybofey - Bridgend - Northern Ireland (Derry)

Increasing from 0 at the N15 in Ballybofey to 280 at the border with Northern Ireland (A2 in Derry).

The section Ballybofey - Letterkenny used to be the N56 until 1993.

N14 Letterkenny - Lifford

Sections:

1 Letterkenny - N13

Increasing from 0 to the 15 at the Dry Arc roundabout (N13) in Letterkenny

2 Manorcunningham - Lifford

Increasing from 15 at the N13 near Manorcunningham to 127 at the N15 in Lifford

N15 Northern Ireland (Strabane) - Lifford - Sligo

Increasing from 0 at the border with Northern Ireland (A38) to 695 at the start of the N4 in Sligo.

N16 Northern Ireland (Enniskillen) - Sligo

Increasing from 0 at the border with Northern Ireland (A4) to 301 at the start of the N4 in Sligo.

N17 Collooney - Galway

Increasing from 0 at the N4 in Collooney to 717 at the R354 (former N63) in Claregalway.

The section south of Tuam was changed to N83 after the opening of the M17 but mileage signs have not been changed yet.

N20 Cork - Limerick

Increasing from 50 at the end of the expressway section near Blarney to 536 at the M20/N21 junction in Patrickswell.

N21 Tralee - Limerick

Increasing from 0 in Tralee to 542 in Adare.

In Castleisland the old route through the town is followed. The new route is about 1.3 miles shorter.

N22 Tralee - Cork

Increasing from -20 in Tralee to 620 at the beginning of the dual carriageway in Cork.

It is not clear why negative values appear. The original route should be even longer. No negative values are signposted.

N23 Farranfore - Castleisland

Increasing from 0 at the N22 in Farranfore to 50 at Castleisland.

N24 Waterford - Limerick

Sections:

1 Waterford - Cahir

Increasing from 5 at the N9 near Waterford to 375 at Cahir.

The road used to start at 0 at the old N9 (now R448).

2 Cahir - Limerick

Increasing from 387 at Cahir to 768 at the M7 in Limerick. The mileage used to continue via the old route through Cahir but was not adjusted.

N25 Rosslare Harbour - Cork

Sections:

1 Rosslare Harbour - Waterford

Increasing from 0 at Rosslare Harbour to 478 in Waterford

The last part is now the R711 but mileage was not adjusted.

2 Waterford - Cork

Increasing from 510 on the old road in Waterford (the R680) to 1226 at the junction M8/N8/N40 in Cork.

N26 Ballina - Foxford

Increasing from 0 at the N59 in Ballina to 188 at the N5 east of Swinford.

The N26 used to be the secondary N57 until 1994.

N27 Cork Airport - Cork

Increasing from 0 at the Airport Road roundabout to 39 at the river Lee bridge in Cork

N28 Ringaskiddy - Cork

Increasing from 0 at Ringaskiddy to 76 at the junction with the N40 in Cork

N30 Enniscorthy - New Ross

Increasing from 0 at the N11 in Enniscorthy to 208 at the N25 in New Ross

The N30 used to be the secondary N79 until 1994.

The new roads N31 and N33 do not have kilometerage.

N51 Delvin - Drogheda

Increasing from 0 at the N52 in Delvin to 330 at the M1 west of Drogheda.

The sign 0001 is wrongly located at 4.

N52 Nenagh - Dundalk

The N52 is the only road that partly has mileage running in the opposite direction, on the Dundalk bypass.

1 Nenagh - Kilbeggan

Increasing from 0 at the old N7 in Nenagh to 517 at the M6 junction in Kilbeggan

2 Tyrrellspass - Mullingar

Increasing from 520 at the M6 junction in Tyrrellspass to 630 at N4 junction 15 in Mullingar No signs appear on the old route. The values are obtained by projection from the old road and extrapolation.

3 Mullingar - Ardee

Increasing from 643 at N4 junction 16 in Mullingar to 1066 at the N2 in Ardee

4 Ardee - Dundalk

Increasing from 1067 at the N2 north of Ardee to 1161 at the M1 exit Dundalk south

5 Dundalk eastern bypass

Decreasing from 131 at the M1 exit Dundalk south to 72 at the M1 exit Dundalk north This is the only know case where mileage runs in the opposite direction to the rest of the road. There is only one sign but the derived 0 point would be close to (though not exactly at) the border crossing on the old N1 which is now the R132.

N53 Castleblayney - Dundalk

Sections:

1 Castleblayney - Northern Ireland (Cullaville)

Increasing from 0 at the old N2 in Castleblayney to 42 at the Northern Ireland border (A37 via Cullaville)

2 Northern Ireland (Cullaville) - DundalkThis section does not have mileage signs. It can be assumed that mileage used to run from 42 at the border to about 120 in Dundalk.

N54 Cavan - Monaghan

Sections:

1 Cavan - Northern Ireland (Gannon's Cross)

Increasing from -1 at the N3 in Butler's Bridge to 56 at the Gannon's Cross border with Northern Ireland The mileage used to be from 0 at the old N3 in Butler's Bridge.

2 Exclave in Northern Ireland

The section in the exclave between the border crossings at Clonooney and Clonagore does not have mileage signs. It is 2.2 miles long and therefore does not match with the gap of 1.6 miles in the sections from Butler's Bridge and Monaghan.

3 Northern Ireland - Clones - Monaghan

Increasing from 72 at the Northern Ireland border to 214 at the old N2 in Monaghan.

N55 Athlone - Cavan

Sections:

1 Athlone - Edgeworthstown

Increasing from 0 at the N6 junction in Athlone to 239 at the N4 west of Edgeworthstown

2 Edgeworthstown - Cavan

Increasing from 239 at Edgeworthstown to 490 at the N3 bypass east of Cavan The route via the new N4 at Edgeworthstown is slightly longer than the old route, but the concurrent part with the N4 is also slightly longer. Therefore there is only a negligible duplication between the sections.

N56 Donegal - Letterkenny

Increasing from 0 at the N15 roundabout in Donegal to 950 in Letterkenny.

N58 Ballyvary - Foxford

Increasing from 0 at the N5 in Ballyvary to 70 at the N26 in Foxford.

N59 Ballysadare - Galway

Increasing from -11 at the N4 in Ballysadare to 1840 at the N6 and R338 in Galway

The N59 used to start at 0 in Ballysadare but part of the old N4 was changed to N59 when the new N4 dual carriageway replaced it. Therefore the N59 now begins at -11, but negative numbers are not signposted. 

The N59 is the longest road in Ireland with the highest mileage value 1840.

N60 Castlebar - Roscommon

Increasing from 110 at Castlebar N84 to 684 at the N61 in Roscommon.

The N5 between Westport and Castlebar used to be the N60, then mile 0 was in Westport.

N61 Boyle - Athlone

Sections:

1 Spur from the N4 Boyle bypass to Boyle

Increasing from 0 at the N4 to 13 at the old N4 in Boyle

2 Boyle - Athlone

Increasing from 8 at the old N4 in Boyle to 451 at the N6 Athlone bypass.

N62 Horse and Jockey - Athlone

Sections:

1 Horse and Jockey - Birr

Increasing from 0 at the old N8 (now R639) in Horse and Jockey to 358.0 at Birr

2 Birr - Athlone

Increasing from 366 at the N52 north of Birr to 581 at the R446 (former N6) east of Athlone.

A short section of the old N6 was changed to N62 to link it to the new M6/N6.

N63 Claregalway - Longford

Sections:

1 Claregalway - Roscommon

Increasing from 0 at the N83 (former N17) in Claregalway to 406 at the N61 in Roscommon.

Remarkably, a new sign 0 was put up between 2015 and 2017, shortly before this section was downgraded to R354.

2 Roscommon - Longford

Increasing from 406 at the N61 in Roscommon to 589 at the old N5 in Longford.

N65 Loughrea - Borrisokane

Increasing from 0 at the R446 east of Loughrea to 252 in Borrisokane

N67 Tarbert - Kilcolgan

Sections:

1 Tarbert - ferry

Increasing from 1000 at the N69 in Tarbert to 1016 at the Shannon ferry

2 Killimer - Kilcolgan

Increasing from 0 at the Shannon ferry near Killimer to 786 at Kilcolgan The old N18 and R446 between Kilcolgan and Galway was changed to N67, but mileage signs have not been updated.

N68 Kilrush - Ennis

Increasing from 0 at the N67 in Kilrush to 260 in Ennis

N69 Tralee - Limerick

Increasing from 0 in Tralee to 627 at the old N18 in Limerick

N70 Tralee - Kenmare

Increasing from 10 at Tralee to 885 at Kenmare

The road used to start at 0 in the center ot Tralee

N71 Killarney - Cork

Increasing from 0 at the N22/N72 roundabout in Killarney to 1174 at the Cork bypass N40

N72 Killorglin - Dungarvan

Sections:

1 Killorglin - Killarney

Increasing from 1000 at the N70 in Killorglin to 1093 at the N22/N71 roundabout in Killarney

2 Killarney - Dungarvan

Increasing from 0 at the N22 east of Killarney to 902 at the N25 north of Dungarvan

N73 Mallow - Mitchelstown

Increasing from 0 at the N72 in Mallow to 213 at the M8 east of Mitchelstown

N74 Tipperary - Cashel

Increasing from 0 at the N24 in Tipperary to 115 in Cashel

N75 Thurles - Twomileborris

Increasing from 0 at the N62 in Thurles to 56 at the old N8 (now R639) in Twomileborris

N76 Clonmel - Kilkenny

Increasing from 0 at the N24 east of Clonmel to 265 at Kilkenny

N77 Kilkenny - Durrow

Increasing from 24 at the Kilkenny bypass to 168 at Durrow

It is not clear where mile 0 used to be as 24 is less than 2.4 miles from the city centre.

The N8 between Durrow and Portlaoise was changed to N77 after the M8 opened in 2010. It is not known whether mileage signs were adjusted.

N78 Kilkenny - Athy

Increasing from 0 at the N77 north of Kilkenny to 315 at the M9 exit east of Athy. The road used to go the old N9 in Kilcullen until 2010 and was about 7 miles longer then.

N80 Enniscorthy - Tullamore

Sections:

1 Enniscorthy - Carlow

Increasing from 0 at the N11 north of Enniscorthy to 280 at Carlow.

2 Carlow - Tullamore

Increasing from 300 at Carlow to 724 at Tullamore. The mileage used to continue thorugh Carlow but no longer matches since the bypass was opened in 1999.

N81 Ballon - Dublin

Increasing from 0 at the N80 near Ballon to 478 at the M50 in Dublin

N83 Tuam - Charlestown

Sections:

1 Tuam - Ballyhaunis

Increasing from 3 in Tuam to 192 at the N60 in Ballyhaunis Mile 0 was at the old N17 when the road ran along the High Street which was both ways but is now one way westbound.

2 Ballyhaunis - Charlestown

Increasing from 193 at the N60 in Ballyhaunis to 288 south of Knock airport

N84 Galway - Castlebar

Increasing from 4 at the Kirwan roundabout in Galway to 464 at the N60 in Castlebar

The road used to start at the R338 in Galway when the N6 still continued east via the Sean Mulvoy Road (until around 1995) where mile 0 used to be.

N85 Ennis - Ennistymon

Increasing from 0 at the R458 (former N18) in Ennis to 161 in Ennistymon

N86 Tralee - Dingle

Increasing from 0 at the junction with the former N70 in Tralee to 305 in Dingle

N87 Northern Ireland (Enniskillen) - Belturbet

Increasing from 0 at the border with Northern Ireland (A32 from Enniskillen) to 177 at Belturbet
