System

Signs and road markings

Signs either rounded on top like the classical km stones

or rectangular. They sometimes have the road number in a small strip above the number. In some departements a left or up arrow on the signs in the positive direction (D, see below) indicates that values increase and in the opposite direction a down or right arrow appears.

In some regions or departements, the signs appear only every km while others have them every 100 or 500 m.

There are often short white lines on the road surface which can be seen from the air, especially on national roads. The km values are also written on the asphalt on some roads, and the hectometer values appear sometimes with only one digit.

Discontinuities

There are some 'jumps' in km values for historical reasons and motorways often have separate kilometerage on toll sections, typically km values are reset to 0 at toll barriers.

National roads

On national roads there is a kilometerage per departement. Values typically increase in the same direction in all departements along the route and start at 0 at each border but there are exceptions.

Left and right

In many cases, the positive direction is marked as D and the negative direction as G. This stands for Droite (right) and Gauche (left) and is illustrated below:

Looking from the start point km 0 (or some positive value, looking at the stretch with higher values), one sees the signs with D on the right and the signs with G on the left.

The D and G usually appear as suffixes, rarely as prefixes.

Stretching and the integer plus offset system

When a road is realigned, the kilometer values are 'stretched' or 'compressed'. In rare cases, the hectometers are also stretched. For example on the A9 near Montpellier, between 105 and 106 the hectometer signs are about 120 m apart.

More often, an 'integer and offset' system is applied. For example, assume the old straight road is replaced between km 2 and 7 by a bypass that is 6.3 km long:

Up to km 2 the signs indicate a decimal km value as usual (e.g. 1.5). The integer values are distributed evenly between the unchanged km 2 and 7 so that each 'kilometer' is stretched to 1260 m (note that 1260 m times 5 is 6300 m). Then between each of those integer values an offset ranging from 0 to 1260 is applied. Thus for example km 2+1100 lies 1100 m after km 2 and 160 m before km 3.

The hundreds of meters can be indicated in three ways:

Format x + y

where x is the integer km value and y is the number of meters

Format x,y

where x is the integer km value and y is the number of hm

or

Format x,y

where x is the integer km value and y is the number of m

Conversely, if the new road is shorter than the old road, the integer km values can be distributed proportionally along the road and the offset simply ranges to some value strictly smaller than 1000. For example, km 4+900 can be only 10 m instead of 100 m from km 5 when the 'kilometers' are only 910 m long.
