องในการเฉลิมฉลองความสัมพันธ์ทางการทูตโปรตุเกส-ไทย ครบรอบ 500 ปี “รายการรำลึกเอเชีย 2011” และสถาบันกามอยช์ แห่งกระทรวงการต่างประเทศโปรตุเกส และมูลนิธิโอเรียนท์ ผ่านสถานเอกอัครราชทูตโปรตุเกส กรุงเทพ ฯ รู้สึกเป็นเกียรติที่ได้นำนิทรรศการ หน้ากากเอเชีย มาจัดแสดงที่หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร ชั้น 4 ในวันที่ 15 กันยายน – 6 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2554

นิทรรศการนี้ นำพาให้ประจักษ์ถึงความหลากหลายอันงดงาม (และเอื้อประโยชน์) ของหน้ากาก ซึ่งนาย กัวะ ออน เก็บรวบรวมไว้ งานสะสมเกี่ยวกับชาติพันธุ์วิทยานี้ ประกอบด้วยวัตถุกว่า 10,000 ชิ้น ซึ่งสมาคมศิลปะและประเพณีราษฎร์แห่งเอเชีย ก่อตั้งโดยนาย ฌัก แป็งปาโน ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านจีนศึกษา ได้บริจาคให้แก่พิพิธภัณฑ์โอเรียนท์ กรุงลิสบอน หน้ากากที่จัดแสดงนี้ เป็นตัวแทนชีวิตเหนือธรรมชาติ เทพเจ้า และสัตว์ในจินตนาการจากโลกสมมุติของบรรดาวัฒนธรรมท้องถิ่น เคยสวมใส่ในศาสนพิธีก่อน แล้วจึงนำมาใช้ในการแสดงนาฏศิลป์ และละครในเวลาต่อมา เช่นเดียวกับสิ่งของอื่น ๆ ในงานสะสมของนาย กัวะ ออน หน้ากากเหล่านี้ เป็นประจักษ์พยานให้กับศิลปการละครและเรื่องเล่าหลายประเภท ซึ่งสื่อความเกี่ยวกับเทวตำนาน รวมทั้งประวัติศาสตร์ และนิทานที่รู้จักกันทั่วไปในอารยธรรมเอเชียอันยิ่งใหญ่

Masks of Asia

In the course of the Celebrations the 500th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Portugal and Thailand, the Embassy of Portugal in Bangkok is very much privileged and thankful to the Fundação Oriente to be able to present the exhibition of its collection Masks of Asia at the prestigious Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) with the invaluable support of the Portuguese Commission for the Commemorations of Asia and the Instituto Camões of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, between the 15 of September and the 6 of October, 2011.

This exhibition features the aesthetical (and functional) diversity of the masks that are part of the Collection Kwok On. This ethnographic collection comprises over 10,000 objects donated, in 1999, to the Orient Museum, Lisbon, by the Association d’Arts et Traditions Populaires de l’Asie which was founded by the sinologist Jacques Pimpaneau. The masks on display represent supernatural beings, divinities, and fantastic animals from the imaginary of local cultures. They were used in religious rituals, and later in several shows, dance performances and theaters. These objects take their place and meaning in the performing arts and narrative genres conveying the myths and also the histories and tales common to the great Asian civilizations.
