Jeannot, Le plancher/the carved floor (1972)

In my post of May 25, 2009, I related the story of Jean and the message he carved in the floor of his house.

Here is the text in french:

Notes

1. I have stayed as close as possible to the original text.

2. The original has no interpunction. To make the translation better readable, I have created alineas and used the sign "/" to mark parts of the text that, in as far as I can see, belong together. Reading the text along these lines in my opinion makes it quite understandable and I for myself have no problems in getting a grip on the inherent logic of the message. I am saying this because of comments that have described the text as `un manifeste incompréhensible`(Isabelle Monin in Le Nouvel Observateur). Of course, I do welcome critique on the `interpunction`, because it´s just my way to make the message better understandable.

3. Jeannot, in his illness, thought he was being observed and that his mind was manipulated from the outside. I found it difficult to translate une invention a voir notre vue a partir de retine de l´image de l´oeil, which I rendered into an invention to see our view from the retina of the image of the eye. This phrase will return in the text. In simple words, I think, Jeannot thought that his mind could be manipulated from the outside and that there also was a device by means of which an outsider could get an impression of what he was seeing.

4. Not being french, I do not know what kind of feeling crapulerie evokes. I translated it as ordinary people, but mean people also is an option

5. The essence of his message is in the text itself. Jeannot has whitened two passages c´est la religion les crimes and nous sommes innocents: religion did the crimes and we are innocent (This observation was made by Bruno Montpied in his weblog le Poignard Subtil, August 5, 2007)

6. In the text we find the name of Paule, the sister of Jeannot, who lived with him in the house. In my opinion we in the text refers to Jean and Paule.
