Notes:

This species formerly bred, with the largest colonies—from "five pairs to over a hundred" (Palmer 1949)—in southern Penobscot and eastern Washington Counties. Records of migrants and summering birds up through the 1980s, except those above, not listed; many scattered reports perhaps not listed here either.

*** The published date cited in American Birds is 27-31 July 1989, but the observers reported fledglings at the end of August (in eBird). The full dates and presence of the birds that nested at Winslow needs clarification.
