JOHN YOUNG

In colonial times John Young lived in Canajohary on the Mohawk River in Tryon, County, New York. During the American Revolution he served as a Lieutenant in the Indian Department at Fort Niagara. Following the war he settled on the Grand River in Haldimand County. The following is his Claim for Revolutionary War Losses heard by the Commissioners of Claims at Niagara on 23 Aug 1787. Personally appeared before me R. Hamilton one of His Majestys Justices of the Peace for the Province of Quebec the above mentioned John Young and deposed that the above accounts are Just and True. (Signed) R. Hamilton J. P.

Sworn before me at Niagara}

this 7th day of December 1787} (Signed) R. Hamilton J. P.

Personally appeared before me at Niagara this 7th day of December 1787 Adam Young and Maketh Oath that he himself in or about the year 1776 gave a good deed for the within mention’d Farm No 1 containing 105 Acres of Land to the within mentioned John Young being in possession of all the above mentioned Property both Real and Personal at the time he the said John Young was drove off by the Rebels in March 1777 all or most part of which was taken by the Rebels soon after his Departure and his family drove off the premises – And that the valuation put upon his said Property amounting to £1141.4 New York Currency is not exaggerated but under the Real Value as this Deponent was himself offered £1000 New York Currency by Peter Ramsay in New York for the said 105 acres of Land before he gave it to his Son. —

This Deponent further says that his Brother the late Frederick Young Esqr deceased was possessed of Farm No 2 containing 250 Acres of Land with Stock, Buildings, utensils &c as within account adjoining the said Farm No 1 – That his said Brother Frederick died at the King’s Garrison of Niagara in the year 1777 leaving Issue one only Son who died in the year 1779 Intestate and without Issue by which the said John Young became the sole and legal Heir to his whole Estate. This Deponent further says that to the best of his Knowledge there was no mortgage or Debt on the said Estate and that the Deeds of both Estates No 1 & 2 are in the hands of the Rebels if not destroyed by them – [Adam Young made his mark]

Personally appeared before me at Niagara this 7th day of December 1787 John Young of Niagara in the Province of Quebec Settler and being duly Sworn Deposed that he held the Estate intitled No 1 in the within Schedule by a Deed of Gift of his Father – And the Estate No 2 in same paper as Heir to his uncle Frederick Young Esqrs only Son who died in the year 1779 two years after his Father Intestate and without Issue.

Personally appeared before me at Niagara this 7th day of December 1787 Henry Wm Nelles Settler of Niagara in the Province of Quebec Settler Maketh Oath that he knew the said John Young to be in possession of the Farm No 1 as specified in the within account that to the best of his Knowledge, he the said John Young possess Houses and Stock as specified in that account which the Deponent declares he does not think valued above their Real Value. – He also deposeth that the Estate and other things described in account No 2 were in possession of Frederick Young Esqr to whom the said John Young is Heir at Law. – He further declares that these Estates were Confiscated and Sold by the Americans in consequence of his John Young’s attachment to Government.
