Our research

We formally define symmetry to be any mapping of a structured mathematical object onto itself in such a way that the structure of the object is preserved. Student researchers in the Symmetry FRI Stream investigate applications of this definition of symmetry to their independent research projects across different areas of mathematics.

Discrete mathematics research questions

1. How can we define the terms we are using to make sure everyone has the same understanding?

2.  How do you convincingly show that you know something must be true, rather than just seeing that it’s true for some specially chosen examples?

3.  How do we communicate mathematical ideas ?
