Taking it forward from the page My journey to Engineering Institute. I worked on Artificial Intelligence as my major project of engineering; as always, for completing an engineering degree student is supposed to complete a major project, I was no exception..

Artificial intelligence - fuzzy logic based design

My first encounter with AI was when I saw an advertisement for a washing machine named “Videocon Fuzzy Magic” in Electronics for you magazine. This was just the beginning of my immensely enlightening sojourn into the field of Fuzzy logic and AI then I decided to delve deeper into it. Furthermore, the novel concept on AI as portrayed in the movie “The Matrix” served to fuel my interest in this field. My hands-on approach served to benefit me yet once more in that it provided for me a germinal idea which I translated into my major research project.

My obsession makes my life a fever of very high intensity. I worked on this project somewhere from the mid 3rd year of my engineering because I was very impressed by the concept and was willing to do anything to work on AI. I collected reading material from various sources talked to my professors and got basic idea on the subject. I went to my Head of the Department and asked him if he would be willing to guide me on the project. I contacted one more Head of the Department (Computer Application department) for the same. Generally, senior professors guide select post-graduate students. So, I was interviewed on basics of AI, idea to work on and how do I want to proceed. My professors were impressed and they nodded. So, an undergraduate student working alone on degree project had two project guides both were Head of the Department of their respective department.

I rented a computer to work on the project for the obvious reason of insufficient funds and not owning a computer. Renting a computer, in Gwalior, that time used to cost – at home -700/- ($ 14-15) and going to a computer shop and renting – 250/- ($5). Going to the computer shop (at their convenient time) used to save about 450/- a huge amount. Just to compensate on home Vs shop renting, I used to work on the coding on paper and mentally compiling and learning newer concepts of the programming language. I continued this till completion of my project.

Peer pressure was other challenge they beleaguered me for the decisions – taking a huge challenge and working alone with two project guides (a highly unlikely case in undergrads). The challenges that came up during the course of this work were frustrating at times, but my enthusiasm and tenacity never wavered. This work though initially assumed to be a classic case of overextending one’s knowledge and capabilities, received my department faculty’s approval and commendations from various sources once report was tabled. This incident taught me the importance of self-belief and perseverance more than any incident in my life and that my fruits of success are only sweet after weathering several odds and obstacles. The reward for the hard work put forth was selection of this research paper in a national level seminar.

TRIZ an Introduction

This little one page article was an introduction to the concept of TRIZ (The theory of inventive problem solving).

Why TRIZ?

This little one page article was for understanding the advantages of TRIZ and what are the steps followed in this logical innovation & problem solving methodology.

Simple application of TRIZ

This article was published in TRZ-Journal Dec 2006. This is how I learnt applying the concept of TRIZ in day-to-day life, one article on my style of learning.

Evolution in wound treatment methods

Research work on the paper 'Using Trends of Evolution to Direct Wound Treatments’, required the authors to collect and read data over a period of 3-4 months for formulating and building on this research work. The total soft copy documents read were about 18 MB and other books for reference. Interviewing the Doctors and discussing with them itself was a great experience. Biggest challenge was convenience them and make them visualize the trend. It took about 5-8 meetings to convenience doctors and show the complete flow of evolution pattern and benefit of this research work.

Improving Travel Infrastructure in Mumbai

Population explosion is a curse as well as a boon for India. It is the second biggest market of the world. It is a strength, but at the same time it causes a scarcity of infrastructure and results in other infrastructure related issues.

This paper tackles the infrastructure of Mumbai in innovative ways to solve the problem of over crowding in local trains, buses and traffic on road.

Example of a simple Trend

The trend is 'a general direction of movement' either ways. In case of product development, improving the product in fit, form or function is the trend of the product development.

This example was published in a news letter of Creax - "More Inspiration".

Education for All - TRIZ in social sector innovation

In this paper the author is articulating, how TRIZ is and further can help in innovations in social sectors such as education, municipal management, government policy making and infrastructure developments. The fundamental TRIZ concepts of resolving contradictions can be very helpful in resolving stalemates of existing as well as new policies and can become basic building blocks for overall development of societies. In this paper, author has articulated a nationwide movement of “Education For All” by the Government of India, as an example of innovation in social sector.
