Indian Classical Music & I

Mr Holland’s opus - "Playing music is fun, its about heart, feelings and moving people. Its something beautiful and being alive." A dialog from movie Mr Holland's opus.

I thought to remember a time when I decided to learn Indian Classical Music, when was it when I decided to learn Indian Classical Music? It was way back in 1994-95 when I used to listen to Yuvvani an Akashvani Indore program on 648KHz. In this program in one rainy season I heard a song - "Tere naina talash karen jise vo hai tujhme kahin deevane"... sung by Manna Dey sa'b. That time -

1. I did not know that this song is sung by him,

2. I did not know what is the context of the song in the movie (Talash),

3. I was too callow to be spiritual but I sensed a spiritual touch in the song (remember I did not know the context of the song), this song was very spiritual for me [the meaning of the lines of the song is - what you are searching in the outside world lies within you].

Slowly, I came to know about Manna Dey sa'b and started listening to his songs very diligently - Laaga chunari main dag, kon aaya mere man ke dware etc. I did not know anything about the Raagdari (singing typical Hindustani Classical Raags) and that was the time which made me think about learning Indian Classical Music seriously.

The time came - 2008 January I decided that yes I am going to do it now, much of thinking it is time to take actions now. Raagdari is work of virtuoso, I am not; but someday I would want to do the same. Raagdari will not be for someone else or for stage presentation, it will be for my pleasure and because I see immense connection between spirituality and Classical Music - I would not mind and worry about the listeners - that would be a personal affair.

Mere naina talash kare jise vo hai mujhhime kahin ...
