Mercenaries

Mercenary companies are frequently employed by governments of all kinds in the 23rd Century. Most such groups are not autonomous, having permanently signed on with one Galactic Power or another (examples include the Gurkha Battalions of the Western Combine; The Vanguard RCT of the FSE and the Neo-Soviet Rangers of the ESU). This allows for a dedicated place to return to after a campaign in order to rest and restock.

In truth only very wealthy mercenary companies are fully self-sufficient, and for each of these there are several dozen small (company-sized) groups that hop from contract to contract under employ of several minor lords and principalities until they are either whittled to nothing or utterly destroyed by opposing forces. Very few of these ever become even moderate groups.

The Mercenary Review and Bonding Commission, based out of the Hague System, provides the primary guidelines of the Mercenary Code by which all registered mercenaries are held.
