Stanek

Frank STANEK (25 Nov 1818 - 11 Oct 1899) was born in Benešov, Bohemia, a town about 30 miles north of Tabor. He married Katherine PRAGROVA, from Vlčeves Bohemia, which is 12 miles WSW of Tabor. They had six children. Katherine died in childbirth, on 8 Oct 1863, and Frank married her sister, Mary PRAGROVA. The family immigrated to America, arriving in New York on 25 Jul 1868, and made their way to Chelsea, Iowa. This is all on the PRAGR page, which has a lot of overlap with this one.

I recently found data for Frank STANEK's paternal line, going back another 5 generations. This information all came from one family tree on the internet, Stanjek Familienstammbau. I have deleted it from this page because I can't verify it. In particular, that Frank STANEK, my 3g-grandfather, is the son of Joseph STANJEK b: 1777, d: 06 May 1838 in Bobrovníky, Moravia.

Frank and Katherine (PRAGROVA) STANEK lived in Vlčeves, and had 6 children:

Joseph STANEK

Mary STANEK (1840 - Aft. 1920)

Frank J. STANEK Jr (30 Oct 1844 - 3 Oct 1918)

John STANEK (1846 - 29 Dec 1901)

Katharine STANEK (Oct 1854 - 21 Jul 1907)

Terezie STANEK (8 Oct 1863 - 16 Nov 1890)

Mary PRAGROVA continued raising her sister's children, and lived to be 104.

Mary (PRAGROVA) STANEK

Different documents give different dates for the immigration of the STANEKs. It all seems to have happened between 1863 and 1868. Frank Jr either came to Iowa first and married Mary when she came over with his family, or else they were married in Bohemia and came over together, before his family. This was a time of mass exodus from Bohemia - see the Immigration page. Of course, it was also a difficult time for the US. I'm sure every aspect of life was affected by the ongoing or recently concluded American Civil War!

The descendants of the six children of Frank and Katherine (PRAGROVA) STANEK are described below.

Frank J. STANEK Jr married his first cousin, Mary CHALOUPEK (see below). Mary was the daughter of Vojtech "Albert" and Elnora (PRAGROVA) CHALOUPEK. Elnora was a sister of Frank's mother, Katherine (PRAGROVA) STANEK. So Frank Jr and Mary both had Joseph and Katerina (FUK) PRAGR as grandparents, and their mothers were sisters. See the Pragr page.

Mary CHALOUPEK was the daughter of Vojtech "Albert" CHALOUPEK and Elnora PRAGROVA. Vojtech CHALOUPEK is not related to my CHALOUPEK line, as far as I know, and I have not been able to find his parents or siblings. I have had better luck with Elnora PRAGROVA's ancestors.

Frank Stanek

From the "History of Chelsea, Iowa, 1869-1969", p. 250:

Frank Stanek was born at Benesov, near Tabor, Bohemia, October 30, 1844. Not wishing to serve in the Austrian Army under the Emperor Franz Joseph, he came to America in 1862 and settled in Iowa City with relatives. There he helped in their nursery business learning to graft apple trees and grapes. After two years, he came to Tama County and settled on a farm two miles south of Chelsea. His father, stepmother, brothers, sisters and fiance, Mary Chaloupek, arrived in Chelsea in 1865. Shortly after their arrival, Mary and Frank were married. In addition to farming, Frank Stanek worked on the Chicago and North Western Railroad when it was being built across Iowa. After 26 years on the farm, he bought Chelsea Roller Mill and moved to town.

The 1870 US Census for Salt Creek Township, Tama County, Iowa, has Frank and Mary, along with Frank Jr, and his wife, Mary. Also listed is 7-year-old Arassa, who must be Teressa, or Terezie. I have not been able to locate Mary, Joseph, Katherine or John Jr in 1870. However, John Jr and Anna VISTINE were married in Chicago, on 20 Apr 1873. (There were and still are many STANEKs in Chicago, and I haven't been able to connect them with my STANEKs.)

The STANEKs, circa 1893

Back row: Mary Josephine, John William, Frank J. III, Albert, Frances

Front row: Margaret, Frank J. Jr., Josephine Mary, Mary (CHALOUPEK)

Margaret STANEK (1 Apr 1890 - 1970) This is the same Margaret as the little girl on the left in previous picture.

The Atlas of Tama County (1875) has a plat map of Salt Creek . It shows two small, adjacent farms, 1.5 miles south and a little west of Chelsea, under the names F. STANEK (80 acres) and J. STANEK (59.77 acres). Although close to Chelsea, these farms are on the other side of the Iowa river. I'm guessing that J. STANEK was John, who would have been 29, and F. STANEK could be either his father or his older brother, who would have been 57 and 31, in 1875. Maybe Frank Sr had divided his already small farm among his two sons, giving the older son the larger part. However, Frank Sr lived another 24 years.

Frank and Frances (STANEK) BEHOUNEK, 1893

Frank STANEK Jr and John STANEK both had daughters named Frances STANEK, born four years apart, and they were both called Fannie. I had trouble keeping these separate, but I think Frank Jr's daughter is the one who married Frank BEHOUNEK (above), and John's daughter married Frederick J. PRUSHA (below). Frances also appears in the group photo (above).

Albert STANEK, nephew of my gg-grandfather John STANEK, married Caroline "Carrie" YAROSHEK, niece of my great-grandmother, Mary YAROSHEK.

FRANK STANEK AND THE CHELSEA MILL

From THE TAMA COUNTY HISTORY, Union Publishing Co., 1883:G . W. Gower built a steam flouring mill at Chelsea in 1873. It is a three story building, 30 x 60 feet, with two run of stone for grinding wheat, and all necessary machinery for making first class flour. Anthony Wilkinson and J. A. Willy succeeded Gower as proprietors of the mill. The mill was closed for a short time, then A. Palmer purchased an interest, and the business was again started for a short time. In 1881, Prusha and Slama purchased the mill . . .

In 1890 Frank Stanek bought the Chelsea mill which at that time ground rye only. He later installed machinery for grinding wheat which the farmers raised and hauled to the mill in wagons . They exchanged it for flour which was sold under the name o f May Flower.

The Stanek family was connected with the mill for thirty years . Mr. Stanek, his son-in-law, Albert Polka, his sons, Frank J . Stanek and John W. Stanek, and Fred J. Prusha all were active in the business. In later years, Mr. Stanek retired

Frank Stanek came from Bohemia in 1867. At Chelsea he married Mary Chaloupek who was also born in Bohemia. He worked on the Chicago & North Western railroad when it was being built across Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Stanek were the parents of seven children, only three of whom are still living: John W., Mrs. Fr. J. Parizek, and Mrs. Perry Boyer. Mr. Stanek died in 1917 at the age of 78 and Mrs. Stanek in January, 1928, at the age of 88.

Cousins John William STANEK (15 Jul 1875 - 24 May 1964) and Fred J. PRUSHA (27 Dec 1878 - 20 Jan 1965) at the Chelsea Mill. Both were grandsons of Vojtech "Albert" CHALOUPEK and Elnora PRAGR.

Julia (VAVRA) STANEK, wife of John William STANEK, in 1976

I don't have any dates or information about Joseph STANEK, but I think he had a daughter, Mary. He may not have immigrated to the US.

John STANEK was my gg-grandfather, the grandfather of my grandfather, Milo William POSEKANY. John STANEK married Anna VISTINE (or VYSTAGN, VISTEJN, VYSTEJN, VISTEIN, VISTAIN), born in Bohemia, 1856, child of James VISTINE.

There were a few other STANEK families in Iowa in the 19th century. They were all Catholic, and most named their children Joseph, Mary, Frank, Barbara, John and Katherine. It was a lot of fun to sort all that out!

The 1896 Almanac of Poweshiek County shows a 120 acre farm, in the north central part of Jefferson township, under the name John STANEK. This farm is only about 4 miles south of Chelsea.

John and Anna (VISTINE) STANEK had 15 children.

After Katherine died in 1907, James Vaclav HUSAK married Alysia DUSEK (1872-1946).

Fred J. HUSAK changed his name to HUSHAK, closer to the Czech pronunciation, because of confusion with other HUSAK families in the area. Sisters Frances and Louise HUSAK both married and moved to California.
