Holzknecht

Matĕj and Marie HOLZKNECHT (or HOLCKNECHT), my 6g-grandparents, lived near Chudenice and Belysov, in the Klatovy District, Bohemia. These are villages, about 40 km SSW of Plzen. They may have had many children, but I only know about two sons, Jan Bartolomej and Jan Pavel.

Holzknecht is a Czech family name of German origin and this is German spelling. Holcknecht is the Czech version of the same name with Czech spelling. By the way, it means forest worker or forester’sapprentice if you like (from German holz "wood" and knecht "boy, apprentice, servant").

I don't know anything more about Jan Pavel.

Jan Bartholomej married Ludmila, and they lived and had 9 children in the vicinity of Komosin and Dolany, two villages near Belysov. Infant mortality was common, and many families lost several in infancy or early childhood. At least 4 of these 9 grew up and had spouses.

Michael Jan M. HOLZKNECHT, the second child of Jan Bartholomej and Ludmila, had several residences. At age 23, he married Anna Terezie Barbora CIRKLOVA, age 20, and they had at least 2 children, Vaclav and Barbora.

Michael was born in Komosin-Dolany, 1763, and Anna was born in nearby Točník, 1766. The birth date of their daughter Barbora is not known, and the birth place is listed as Klatovy 25. I suppose that means house #25 in the city of Klatovy, the center of the Klatovy District. (The modern city of Klatovy has a population of about 23,000.) The couple also lived in the area of Tajanov and Bor. Now, Tajanov is a suburb of Klatovy, and I think Bor refers to a suburb that has been incorporated into Klatovy, not the city of Bor, some 50 km away. They also lived near Kout na Šumavě, and the nearby tiny village of Starý Dvůr, about 25 km west of Klatovy. Vaclav was born in Komosin-Dolany, the same place where his father was born. So, in summary, Michael and Anna lived in:

Michael died at age 35, when Vaclav was 8 years old. The cause of death is hlavnicka, which I think means typhoid. Anna also died young, at age 40, when Vaclav was 17. Michael and Anna were my 4g-grandparents, so I will return to them, after telling what I know of Michael's siblings.

I have no more information about Anna Marie, Gabriel, Barbora, Jan, Anna Barbora or Jan, the first, third, fourth, fifth, seventh and ninth children of Jan Bartolomej and Ludmila HOLZKNECHT. There were two boys named Jan, in addition to Jan Jiri. It would seem that the Jan born in 1770 had died, and they reused the name for the youngest child, in 1780. Similar possibilities for Anna Marie, Barbora and Anna Barbora.

Stepan HOLZKNECHT, the sixth child, married Marie PIKLOVA, from the area of Sedlice and Milava, about 25 km east of Klatovy, in the Strakonice District. Today, Sedlice is a small town with population 1243, and Milava is a tourist area, with little or no population, near lake Milava.

Stepan and Marie were married on 21 Nov 1798, in Chanovice, a village between Klatovy and Sedlice, still in the Klatovy District. They had at least one child, Barbora, in Dozice, a tiny village about 30 km NE of Klatovy, in the Plzen District.

Barbora HOLZKNECHTOVA had two husbands: Josef SCHOBER and Jan SCHOBER. I don't know if they were related.

Barbora had one child with Josef, in 1831, and then 6 more with Jan, starting in 1833. The child of Barbora and Josef was named Josef. He married Anna PIKLOVA, and they had three boys, all of whom died in infancy, and one girl.

Jan was the son of Jan SCHOBER and Barbora WOLLMUTOVA, from Tazovice, in the Strakonice District. His occupation was pachtyr, which means tenant farmer. Jan Sr. was pohodný, which means knacker, or someone who disposes of dead animals and pests. Residences of Jan SCHOBER and Barbora HOLZKNECTOVA:

Jan Jiri HOLZKNECHT, the eighth of nine children, married Terezie HELLEROVA, daughter of Vavrinec HELLER, from house #50 in Kolinec, just 10 km SE of Klatovy. I don't know if they had any children. They lived in Tajanov, house #27. He was 23, and she was either either 15 or 16 on their wedding day, depending on whether her birthday was after or before 22 Nov. Terezie's husband and father were both pohodny.

We now return to Michael Jan M. HOLZKNECHT and Anna Terezie Barbora CIRKLOVA, my 4g-grandparents. As mentioned above, they both died fairly young - 35 and 40 - and they had at least two children, Vaclav and Barbora.

Barbora married Bartolomej KRAL, another pohodny. They lived in house #75, in Kanice, a village 25 km NE of Klatovy, in the Domazlice District, and had 5 children there. Since the first child was born in 1811, Barbora and Bartolomej must have been born well before 1800, and probably before 1795.

Vaclav HOLZKNECHT, my 3g-grandfather, had two wives: Josefa SCHLEHOFEROVA and Anna SCHMIEDOVA. He had 5 kids with Josefa, my 3g-grandmother. When she died, he remarried, at age 60, to 22-year-old Anna. Vaclav and Anna had 6 more kids. The last one came along late, when he was 83. Anyway, Vaclav had 11 kids, with birth dates spaced out over 61 years!

Katerina HOLZKNECHTOVA married Matej CHALOUPKA or CHALOUPEK. They were my 2g-grandparents. Two of their sons, Vencil and Frantisek, were the only descendants of Matej and Marie HOLZNECHT who emigrated out of Bohemia. See the CHALOUPEK page.

Of the six children of Vaclav HOLZKNECHT and Anna SCHMIEDOVA, I only have further information on Vaclav and Marie. Vaclav was the second in the family with that name. The first Vaclav was born in 1853, and he must have died, because they reused the name in 1857. The second Vaclav married Marie UBLOVA, and they had six children. Vaclav's father was Marie's great-grandfather, so Marie married her half-grand-uncle. Remember that the elder Vaclav HOLZKNECHT (1789-1881) was 67 when his son Vaclav was born!
