Ghana Place Names is a research project open to all who have an interest in or knowledge of Ghana.

The aim is to find the meanings & origins of as many place names in Ghana as possible.

If you would like to take an active part in the project, email the Project Manager.

Language Consultants

... are needed to attempt to translate place-names where local knowledge is not yet available. If you are fluent in one or more Ghana languages, your expertise would be useful in suggesting translations of place names, especially where local knowledge is not yet available.

Roaming Researchers

... are needed who will be prepared to ask questions about the names of places in their localities, home-towns, or other areas that they visit.

Our researchers are people who have volunteered to investigate a specific area of Ghana. If you would like to take part, go to the Tools section of this website to download/print the documents that you will need, then contact the Project Manager at GhanaPlaNa@gmail.com, to let us know where you intend to do your research. It is useful to have more than one person in an area because it is not always possible for one person to cover all the places listed in a single map square..

School Co-ordinators

... are needed in local schools to supervise and co-ordinate research undertaken by students. Especially needed are teachers in Ghana schools who can co-ordinate research undertaken by students. If you would like your school to take part, contact the Project Manager at GhanaPlaNa@gmail.com, giving your school name & region. The documents that you will need to support your research can all be found in the Tools section of this website.

Ghana Place Names is not funded in any way,and all people who help the project do so in a voluntary capacity (see FAQ).Contact us: at GhanaPlaNa@gmail.com.
