This is the main portal to all toponym records for population centres (cities, towns, villages, etc.).
On the region site home pages you can click any of the linked place names to view its toponym record.
On the A-Z page are links to all toponyms with online records listed alphabetically.

  • On each district sub-page you can view the district map.

  • Below the district map, the meaning & origin of the district name is given if known.

Ghana has 16 administrative regions, each having its own capital city.

The regions are further subdivided into 261 districts with capitals as shown below.

(Past reorganisations have increased the number of districts from 138 to 170 in 2008, to 216 in 2012, to 254 in 2018, to 260 in 2019, and then 261 in 2021.)

On this page you can:

  • click on one of the district names which have links, to open a map of the district in a new tab,

  • click on a region button above or heading below to go to a region sub-page showing all places names in the GPN database for that region.
