Ghana has two significant ranges of hills and mountains, which meet at the most southerly point of the Volta Lake where the Akosombo Dam is situated. From this position:
the Atakora mountain range extends north-north-east, crossing the Togo border east of Hohoe.
the Kwahu Plateau or Scarp extends to the north-west, becoming the Mampong Scarp north of Kumasi, and progressively less dramatically reaching the Côte d'Ivoire border west of Sunyani.
the Akuapem Ridge stretches south-south-west to Pokuase, about 20km north-north-west of Accra.
Other notable features are:
the Gambaga Scarp which stretches west to east across the north-east of Ghana to Togo, defining the course of the White Volta River at this latitude, and the Konkori Scarp which extends roughly north to south through Mole National Park.
inselbergs, such as Adakluto, south of Ho, which rise in splendid isolation from surrounding plains.
