Elevations

Ghana has two significant ranges of hills and mountains, which meet at the most southerly point of the Volta Lake where the Akosombo Dam is situated. From this position:

  • the Atakora mountain range extends north-north-east, crossing the Togo border east of Hohoe.

  • the Kwahu Plateau or Scarp extends to the north-west, becoming the Mampong Scarp north of Kumasi, and progressively less dramatically reaching the Côte d'Ivoire border west of Sunyani.

  • the Akuapem Ridge stretches south-south-west to Pokuase, about 20km north-north-west of Accra.

Other notable features are:

  • the Gambaga Scarp which stretches west to east across the north-east of Ghana to Togo, defining the course of the White Volta River at this latitude, and the Konkori Scarp which extends roughly north to south through Mole National Park.

  • inselbergs, such as Adakluto, south of Ho, which rise in splendid isolation from surrounding plains.
