Suunto透過發展『腕戴式潛水電腦』，在潛水電腦眾多廠牌中漸漸嶄露頭角，從最一剛開始的『Spyder』到後來的『Stinger』，Suunto成為大家優先考量的腕戴式潛水電腦品牌，一直到最新的『D6』與『D9』推出後，更是堅定了這個品牌在大家心中的地位。
潛水電腦的領域裡有眾多的廠牌，現在這些廠牌終於漸漸重視『腕戴式』的市場需求，但目前也只有『Mares Nemo』、『Scubapro Extender』比較接近Suunto的產品風格，其餘產品雖然都是腕戴式卻像是廉價電子錶而非新潮的運動錶。
但 Suunto風格也不是一直都走在固定的路線上，我們不得不承認『Mosquito』完全塑膠的機身，在外觀上很廉價，『Mosquito』的樣子實在不 配和『Stinger』並列，後來推出的『D6』、『D9』在外觀的質感上也大大的勝過『Mosquito』，好吧！反正那是過去式了，現在我們有了更好 的取代產品出現『D4』。
D4有著與D6、D9相同等級的『點矩陣式顯示器』，雖然他的機身並非一體成形，但還好在錶面有個明亮的金屬環，設計上的質感使得一貫的Suunto風格得以延續。
D4採用了D6優異的錶帶與扣具設計，這種新設計比起D9的傳統式好上許多，螢幕顯示的編排方示也承襲了Suunto產品的習慣，如今D4不只與 D6、D9在數據顯示上有相似的排列，甚至與Vyper2、Cobra2也都相似，這使得Suunto產品的愛用者對此新產品可以輕鬆上手。
也許D4與D6、D9最大的不同，在於D4對自由潛水的支援（對現有的D3使用者，D4也是一個很好的更新品），D4獨有的自由潛水紀錄功能配合高達一秒鐘三次的取樣率，不讓你錯失最大深度的紀錄。
D3、Mosquito與D4另一個不同點在於，D4不讓使用者自行更換電池，若電力耗盡必須送回相關經銷商進行更換。
D4在『水肺潛水』與『自由潛水』這兩塊市場都引起相當的注意，我(MARK EVANS)帶著好幾個產品參與船潛，而DeeperBlue.net的執行長 (STEPHAN WHELAN) 也帶了好幾個新產品品參與了他們的自由潛水課程，這使得我們測試了D4在水肺與自潛兩方面的功能。
自由潛水
外 表雖然以塑膠為主體，設計上卻透出一些質感與堅固，這比起看起來像是玩具的 D3、Mosquito是一大進步，點矩陣式顯示器明確而且清晰，視覺上獨有的風格，較長的錶帶可以應付更多種需求，資料取樣率也從原本的一秒一次提升到 一秒三次，這使得在水中移動速度較水肺潛者快的自潛者而言是一向重要的升級，資料紀錄的速度也同樣紮實，不讓你錯過任何一次重要的深度紀錄，D4也增加了 水面警示鈴，搭配多層次的深度與時間警示鈴設定，這新功能讓自潛者在潛水過程中不需要看錶即可對當下的狀況有一定的掌握，不需要看錶是一向重要的貼心設 計，這讓自潛者可以更專注在潛水過程中的放鬆。
當Suunto發表D4，這一款D3與Mosquito的更新產品，整個自由潛水界就引領期盼她的到來，大家好奇這樣的新錶會是什麼樣式、會有什麼樣的新功能Suunto到底能不能在這個新產品滿足自由潛水界的需求？
為了幫助解決這些疑問，我帶了好幾隻錶到 DeeperBlue.net的自潛課程場所，即海軍的30米深水池，讓潛水教練與學生都配戴使用，整個團隊花了兩天的時間進行自由潛水模式的測試使用，並在使用之後提供一些想法。
D4確實是一個令人印象深刻的產品。
最 後一個值得一提的新功能是電腦錶上的數據展示功能，你可以不再依靠電腦傳輸線，直接在錶上展示一整天潛水活動中的任何一次潛水記錄，這個新產品唯一可以抱 怨的部分就是售價600美元，這個價格比起過去的D3或Mosquito都貴上許多，但有鑑於許多自潛者同時也愛好水肺潛水，而這支電腦錶可同時提供了這 兩種需求。STEPHAN WHELAN

The D4 is perfect for everyday wear, as it is lightweight and comfortable, and if you do wear it as a watch, it means you will never accidentally leave your dive computer in your room!
In watch mode, it offers the usual – 12/24 hour display, dual time, date, daily alarm and a stopwatch. In dive mode, it shows (either all the time or at the push of a button) your current depth, maximum depth, current time, nitrox mix, dive time, water temperature and decompression time. It also has audible and visual alarms for dive time and depth. As it uses Suunto’s Deep Stop RGBM algorithm, it shows full decompression data, and you can choose whether or not to activate the deep stop function. It also gives an automatic three-minute countdown once you reach your 5m safety stop.
The D4 can handle a single nitrox mix from 21 per cent right up to 50 per cent, which is more than enough for recreational divers, and the PPO2 limit is adjustable from 0.5 to 1.6 bar. As with all Suunto dive computers, if you complete a dive in ‘nitrox’ mode, it will not allow you to return to ‘air’ mode. If you want to do a dive on air after using a nitrox mix, you just set the nitrox to 21 per cent. This is to prevent accidental setting to ‘air’ mode while using nitrox mixes.
If you are in the habit of logging your dives, the D4 has a 240-hour profile and logbook memory, and you can transfer your dive data to your PC with the optional Dive Manager software.
If you are in the market for an entry-level dive computer – and fancy something you can wear as an everyday watch – then the D4 makes a great choice. It is reasonably priced, stylish, easy to use and has all the features a novice or intermediate recreational diver could want. MARK EVANS
