Caravaggio, a master painter from the Italian Baroque era who was thought to be bisexual. Jarman, a master filmmaker of the twentieth century and a gay man. Bring these two giants together, and what do you get? A classic study of artistic creativity, lust, and madness.

If you are interested in art, you will drool at the re-enactment of Caravaggio’s unorthodox painting practises, and the stunning reproductions of his paintings. If you love theatre, you will applaud Jarman’s ability to pay homage to the stage tradition without “filming theatre”. If you appreciate solid performances, you will be mesmerised by Shakespearean actor Nigel Terry, the magnetic Tilda Swinton (in her first film role), and Sean Bean at his sexiest.Caravaggio won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival that year, and it is easy to see why. The film is a great example of the stylish brashness and theatricality which made Jarman famous. Caravaggio is also an unforgettable trip into a fearless, original mind.
