IGNORANT FAIRIES (Ferzan Ozpetek, 2001)

Italian with English subtitles

Margherita Buy, Stefano Accorsi

Secrets and lies. The bread and butter of the closeted homosexual.

Many (most?) lesbians and gay men opt out of disclosing information about their private lives at one time or another. The theorist Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick ─who saw herself as a gay man in spirit─ once claimed that ‘the closet’ was the key socio-cultural structure of the 20th century.

This film is about an ostensibly heterosexual, married man, who, unknown to everyone, has a long-time gay partner, and is part of a strong and colourful extended queer family made of loving friends, who share their ups and downs over communal meals al fresco.

But will these friends open their door to the bitter and uncomprehending lady who is playing detective on her husband’s trail? And will she come to realise that some secrets can in fact make you freer?
