A school-crush film with a twist… The twist being that this is an intelligent and beautiful avant garde film, which treats its characters seriously.  Actually, director Radley Metzger became famous (infamous, that is) for his plotless gay-friendly soft porn films… but he is quite subdued in this movie, which treats its lesbian sex scenes (including one in the Christian chapel of the boarding school) with uncharacteristic classiness and humility. Pay no notice to the casting of young women as schoolgirls, and pay no notice either to the heavy makeup on those schoolgirls’ faces (it’s the Seventies, honey, even boys wear makeup). But do take full notice of the delicate dance on the screen, as the story steps back and forth, between here and there, spring and autumn, loving and longing.
