Smith ER of A Sqn WW1

ER Smith

Photo of E R Smith, A Squadron DLOY, in the middle east during WW1. It gives us an idea of what some of them actually looked like, in comparison to the nicely pressed uniforms of formal group photos. Notice not only the breech cover to the rifle and the Arabic headgear, but a very unofficial-looking revolver holster, and a little arab style knife!

The original image, donated in 2014, by his (90-year-old) daughter who made her way to our door specifically for the purpose, and donated rather more standard shots of him, prewar. Also donated to the museum were his handwritten 'prayer of thanks' on escaping from a shipwreck after being torpedoed, and the cord that appears around his head cloth.
