Where to Start with Online-Hybrid-VC Classes
So... where do you start for making a new Online or Hybrid class at NC State?
General Health & Safety Disclaimers:
Best practices recommend that it be a class you are comfortable with and have taught face to face a number of times.
Best practices also recommend that you be very comfortable with the technology platform you will be using, ie Blackboard or canvas etc.
Develop your Integrated Course Design Blueprint
(recommended 2 semesters before launch)
The result of this process will give you a detailed blueprint of your course design that is
a-integrated b-practical and c-based on the best practices of the teaching and learning scholarship.
Starting with this will allow you to then find tools to accomplish *your* needs, rather than tools or technology driving the bus for you.
OPTION A: D.I.Y. --- >Download and complete the Self-Directed Guide to Integrated Course Design (PDF).
The Self-Directed Guide is designed to introduce & explain each step in the Integrated Course Design process and offer a series of worksheets for each step. This Guide is a bare-bones distillation of the book Creating Significant Learning Experiences: An Integrated Approach to Designing College Courses.
(Note: a copy of this book is usually available to faculty from the DL Department - dl@ncstatecollege.edu)
OPTION B: One on One or Dept. Consult --- >contact the DL Department (419.755.4706 or dl@ncstatecollege.edu)
The DL Department has had extensive training & experience working with a wide variety of NC State faculty to guide them through the Integrated Course Design process to develop their online-hybrid course blueprint. DL can setup a time that works for you to consult and work with you one on one (or with you and others in your department wanting to develop an online or hybrid course) through the guide and Integrated Course Design process.
OPTION C: Group --- >Sign up for the next offering of the "Intro to Online-Hybrid Teaching" workshop series
Beginning late Fall 2012, the DL Dept will be offering this series of 3 workshops which is aimed at walking faculty through each piece of the Integrated course design process and worksheets. The workshops also offer opportunities for collegial dialog and discussion with your peers on the application, implication and practical aspects of each of the elements fo the design process and the realities of online/hybrid teaching. All faculty who complete the workshop series will receive a certificate of completion and your dean, chair & HR will be notified of your successful completion of these workshops.
As needed/preferred at any point throughout #1 or #3, contact the DL Department (419.755.4706 or dl@ncstatecollege.edu) to consult on the Integrated Course Design Process and or finding technology tools to meet your needs
The DL Department monitors and works with the "latest, greatest" instructional technology tools and can advise you of various possibilities, trade-offs and or offer one on one tool training as needed to find the right fit to implement and develop your prototype online or hybrid course.
Contact the NCSC Quality Matters (QM) Peer Review Team (qmteam@ncstatecollege.edu) to get your prototype course Reviewed & Approved
(recommended 1 semester before launch)
The Faculty Caucus and Academic Council have put into place the QM Peer Review Team to offer a Peer Driven, collegial process to insure all NC State Online & Hybrid courses meet the state and national QM standard for best practices in online & hybrid courses.
Once you contact them via the email above, the QM Peer Review Team will contact you within a week to provide details and a tentative date your prototype course is scheduled for a QM Rubric review by the team.
You can access the latest QM rubric outline (PDF) to prepare your prototype for the review. The DL Department has a variety of Blackboard/Canvas QM "fill in the blank" template pieces to address several of the QM rubric standards.
Once the Team approves your prototype, they will contact your dean and chair to notify them your course is ready to be scheduled.
In line with the QM & AQIP processes to foster a college culture of continuous improvement, once your prototype is approved, the Team will then schedule a follow-up review within 3 years.
