Online and Hybrid Teaching at NC State
Where Do I start with Creating/Teaching an Online or Hybrid Course at NC State?
Very exciting that you are considering teaching an online or hybrid class for NC State! based on working with many faculty across a variety of subjects and best practices research, we recommend that both of the following should describe you:
Have taught the course you are considering converting in traditional bricks and mortar in-person format for at least 1.5-two years.
Have utilized Canvas enough to feel very comfortable with at least the basics of Canvas.
If BOTH of these do NOT describe you, then we encourage you to either get some more experience teaching the course and or working with canvas BEFORE starting your distance journey.
If they BOTH DO describe you, here is what you need to understand/do:
Talk with your Assistant Dean and let them know your interest, which specific course and that you have reviewed this page.
Working with your assistant Dean, come up with a target launch date for the course with at least a Year of lead time.
(You can discuss with your Assistant Dean what if any compensation arrangements for development will be needed)
Your Assistant Dean will contact the DL department to get you into the next available round of the NCSC Quality matters (QM) Peer Review team process.
The DL Department will contact you to notify you of when your tentative QM Review Team date for your prototype will be and working backwards when you can setup the initial kickoff 1on1 Instructional Design Meeting and related materials to help you with your ground up Instructional design.
What is the NCSC Quality Matters Review Team Process I need to go through?
As of January 1, 2014 per the VP of Learning (and as approved by Academic Council & Faculty Caucus), all new online or hybrid courses must go through the NCSC Quality Matters (QM) Peer Review Team development process.Â
The process is to ensure that all online & hybrid NC State courses incorporate best practices from the scholarship of Teaching & learning to best support Student Success. At the core is giving you structure and resources to meet the Quality Matters rubric through collegial peer dialog with trained colleagues who are experienced distance instructors.
Here is a summary of the process:
Assistant Deans/Deans notify the DL Department of a new online or hybrid course a faculty member wants to develop.
DL contacts both the QM Review Team to put the course development in the next available development cycle.
DL contacts you the faculty with a welcome, overview and tentative QM Team Review date for the prototype of weeks 1-4 of your course.
DL's email will also ask to setup an in person 1on1 kickoff instructional design consultation to get you started.
At a determined date (usually 4-6 weeks after your initial consult), you will need to have a prototype in Canvas with weeks 1-4 built based on your new instructional design.
At that time, the QM review team will be given access to your prototype to go through it to prep for the review.
A few days before your in person Team Review date, you will be given access to the Team's initial review Notes.
At your in person Review date, you and the team will have a collegial discussion of peers, going through the QM rubric, review notes with you and the team able to bring up or address questions, concerns or confusions about the design of the course.
The Team then makes a recommendation after the review to your assistant Dean if your course is on track or will need further development time and a follow-up review.
Where do I get Oriented on the details of Teaching Online or Hybrid?
For faculty who have no experience teaching online or hybrid, you will need to attend the "Intro to Online & hybrid teaching 101" workshop offered regularly by the DL Department (depending on timing, this can also be offered in a small group or 1on1 session as well but the workshop has been the most helpful when attended with others for peer dialog and discussion). There is also development of a third, self-service option for this material as well. Currently it is a stand alone online presentation:
