.442 inch Revolver

Ball Mark I

The "Cartridge S.A. Ball Pistol .442 inch Mark I" was approved in June 1882 and shown in LoC paragrapgh 7002 dated March 1893 for Land service with the Royal Ulster Constabulary who used it in their Webley revolvers.

Prior to this approval the RIC had procured their ammunition through non military channels. Examples are known with the headstamp ". E . I . 442" which possibly stands for "Eley Ireland".

The .442 ball Mark I had a solid drawn case with Boxer primer. The round nosed lead bullet weighed 219 grains and the propellant charge was 10 grains of Rifle Pistol Powder (blackpowder).

Blank Mark I

"Cartridge S.A. Blank Pistol .442 inch Mark I" was approved for the Royal Irish Constabulary in June 1892 and shown in LoC Paragraph 7002 dated March 1893.

The case was of Boxer construction with a solid drawn brass body riveted to a brass base disc. The case mouth was crimped over.

The charge was 11 grains of Rifle Pistol blackpowder with one wad.
