4-6-2 PACIFIC TYPE - Almost all the Boston & Albany 4-6-2 locomotives were built by Schenectady, the exceptions being Baldwin-built K-14 589, five K-6 built by Brooks and seven Brooks-built K-3 class engines which came from the New York Central in 1937-39. The Pacifics are listed by their B&A 500 series number.

K-14 CLASS - Consisted of fifteen locomotives built for the New York Central as K-11 Class in 1912 and 1913. During 1922-1925 they were rebuilt with drivers raised from 69 to 72 inches while given slightly larger 26x26 inch cylinders to preserve approximately the same tractive force, which was substantially greater than that of the K-1 or K Classes. All were built by Schenectady except 589 which was built by Baldwin.

Note the Elesco feedwater heater and air compressor with shield which give it a different appearance than its B&A twin sisters. 4399 was photographed at Pittsfield on the Boston & Albany on October 12, 1938 by Carlton Parker.

K-3n CLASS - Consisted of seven engines built by Brooks in 1918 for the New York Central and assigned to the Boston & Albany in 1937 (500-503), 1938 (504-505) and 1939 (506). The numbers were those of the K-1 class which had been scrapped. The K-3n had high 79 inch drivers and were somewhat more powerful than the K-1 or K classes but substantially less powerful than the K-14 or K-6 classes.

K-6 CLASS - Consisted of five locomotives built by Brooks in 1925 (590-594) and five by Schenectady in 1926 (595-599). They had 26x26 inch cylinders, 75 inch drivers and operated off 200 lbs. of boiler pressure. With booster operating they produced about twice the tractive force of the first B&A Pacifics. They were redundant after the arrival of the Hudsons and were sent to the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie in 1931.
