MIKADO 2-8-2 TYPE

The Boston & Albany mainly employed Mikado's of the H-5 Class. All had 25x32 inch cylinders, 63 inch drivers and operated off 180 lbs. of boiler pressure. The first fourteen, numbers 1200-1213, H-5j Class, were built by Schenectady in 1913-14. The next ten, numbers 1214-1223, H-5g Class, were ex-2-8-0's rebuilt by Brooks in 1915. In later years other H-5 locomotives were assigned by the New York Central and relettered Boston & Albany 1224-1229.

The Boston & Albany also used for a time, eight H-10a locomotives built by Schenectady in 1922-1923 numbered 183-190, but they were reassigned after the Berkshire type engines arrived. They produced 74,470 lbs. of tractive force at starting with booster operating while the H-5 engines without boosters produced only 48,570 lbs. of tractive force at starting.
