Action Research and Student Choice: How a North Korean Prison Camp Escapee Led to the Creation of a Nuclear Proliferation Module

Nathan Snyder, NYC iSchool, NY, USA

Abstract

My workshop session addressed the research question, “To what extent can student interest impact course curricula?” As a teacher at the NYC iSchool in Manhattan, I am charged with providing authentic student choice opportunities but have grappled with the manifestation of student choice and what role it serves in day-to-day tasks. Should student choice be limited to selecting essay topics and end of unit projects, or should student choice impact teaching and learning in greater depth?
