WINLEY TURNER ORIGINAL PROTOTYPES
Form/Function of original prototype: My original prototype has a "rustic/wooden" aesthetic. I had based this aesthetic decision off of the website of Graffiti and Silk. The website had pastel coloring and a retro vibe. With this gathered information from the website, I decided to create a sign based off those observations.
what new information was gained at site visit: Through the visit of Graffiti and Silk, my total vision had changed for our project. Visiting the thrift store gave us an idea of more bold colors and actual graffiti font. This helped us created an online design through Canva to collect a more accurate representation of Graffiti and Silks vision.
AMELIA JOHNSON PROTOTYPES
Form and Function of the original prototype: My initial prototype was based on a hanging sign so that it could be visible without getting in people's way on the sidewalk. I envisioned a dark background and while the lettering was softer, more pastel coloring.
What I learned from the first visit: After visiting Graffiti & Silk I realized my idea was a little off and the vibe shifted more towards street wear and it had a lot more edge than I initially thought. Our idea now is to paint a mural of some sort with a paint or spray paint medium to create a more "city" like graffiti look.

FINAL DESIGN REVIEW SLIDES
Final Design Review Feedback:
They loved the hearts and the surrounding of the store name. We decided instead of "@mobile hope" it would be "By Mobile Hope". We also have the fonts for Graffiti and Mobile Hope be different. The term boutique was decided to be not very inclusive so we will be leaving that out in the description.
Rough Draft of Sign (To Scale)
Notes:
5ft by 2ft now being changed 5ft by 3ft
Overall text needs to be bigger.
Hearts larger
Progress
Meet with Amy Burns and Allison on November 8th for our final design review. We got feedback from Foxcroft design review remembers aswell as Amy and Allison from Mobile Hope.
After our final design review, we came to a final decision for our sign (an image above is showing our final prototype)
We tested out our original ideas, such as spray paint hearts for our background, but quickly discovered that spray paint will not work for our design vision. We got the suggestion from Ms. Patty (former owner of a sign company) to create our hearts with sign paint instead.
Most recently we started on a scale model of the sign on black paper. We had to redo it as we had messed up the first paper dimensions and restarted. After doing our second life-size prototype we realized our hearts were too small to see from a distance. We were able to take away how the design process would feel, final decisions, and the overall look of the sign through this practice prototype.
Paint has been ordered.
Issues
Spray Paint was hard to control so we decided to stick with using sign paint.
The hearts and overall texts needs to be larger
We could not decide on a description for Graffiti & Silk and ultimately decided that it was Amy's and Allison's decision to make. They did say they weren't sure if they wanted "thrift" in it and they definitely did not want "boutique"
Spray painted hearts
Goals
We need to finish a final to-scale model
Reach out to Amy and Alison to approve our design
Communicate with Mobile Hope about the Purcellville Town requirements/rules, final details, and their preference for "thrift store" wording.
Acquire all our materials. (Paint is ordered)
Make a scale of text.
make stencils for the text
Produce the sign
Prime sign
Paint sign black
Deliver our final sign to Amy and Allison
Process 12/1/22
We started with a base primer and a layer of black paint for the background which dried overnight. An issue we had was that the paint was dry to the touch but with long hard pressure the paint molded to the pressure. We then measured out the dimensions for the "Graffiti & Silk" text, then we cut out an accurate sized prototype and turned it over and put body powder all over it, the flipped it back over. We then traced the lettering with regular number two pencils.
Before starting are final sign we first practiced with sign paint of how we want our hearts to look!

First, we put baby powder on the back of our enlarged printed-out prototype and then flipped it over to line up on the wood. Then we traced the letters so the baby powder would be in the place of the prototype.
