WINLEY TURNER ORIGINAL PROTOTYPES

Form/Function of original prototype: My original prototype has a "rustic/wooden" aesthetic. I had based this aesthetic decision off of the website of Graffiti and Silk. The website had pastel coloring and a retro vibe. With this gathered information from the website, I decided to create a sign based off those observations.

what new information was gained at site visit: Through the visit of Graffiti and Silk, my total vision had changed for our project. Visiting the thrift store gave us an idea of more bold colors and actual graffiti font. This helped us created an online design through Canva to collect a more accurate representation of Graffiti and Silks vision.

AMELIA JOHNSON PROTOTYPES

Form and Function of the original prototype: My initial prototype was based on a hanging sign so that it could be visible without getting in people's way on the sidewalk. I envisioned a dark background and while the lettering was softer, more pastel coloring

What I learned from the first visit: After visiting Graffiti & Silk I realized my idea was a little off and the vibe shifted more towards street wear and it had a lot more edge than I initially thought. Our idea now is to paint a mural of some sort with a paint or spray paint medium to create a more "city" like graffiti look.

FINAL DESIGN REVIEW SLIDES

Final Design Review Feedback:

They loved the hearts and the surrounding of the store name. We decided instead of "@mobile hope" it would be "By Mobile Hope". We also have the fonts for Graffiti and Mobile Hope be different. The term boutique was decided to be not very inclusive so we will be leaving that out in the description.

Process 12/1/22

We started with a base primer and a layer of black paint for the background which dried overnight. An issue we had was that the paint was dry to the touch but with long hard pressure the paint molded to the pressure. We then measured out the dimensions for the "Graffiti & Silk" text, then we cut out an accurate sized prototype and turned it over and put body powder all over it, the flipped it back over. We then traced the lettering with regular number two pencils.

Before starting are final sign we first practiced with sign paint of how we want our hearts to look!

  3. PAINT ENTIRE PLYWOOD BLACK (MULTIPLE COATS)
  4.  USE THE T-SQUARE TO MEASURE OUT THE LETTERING ACCURATELY

  6. PLACE A SCALE PRINT-OUT SIGN ON PLYWOOD, TAKE A SHARP PENCIL AND TRACE THE LETTERING WITH AGGRESSION
  7. TRACE THE LETTERING WITH A WAX PENCIL
  8. USE SKINNY TAPE TO MAKE PERFECTLY STRAIGHT LETTERS
  9. USE WHITE 1-SHOT SIGN PAINT (RECOMMENDED TO DIP IN PAINT THINNER FOR A EASIER/FASTER PAINT STROKE) AND SCRIPT BRUSHES TO FILL IN THE LETTER. LET DRY
  10. USE WAX PENCIL TO SKETCH A LINE WHERE THE HEARTS WILL BE PLACED
  11. PAINT RED AND ORANGE HEARTS. LET DRY!
  12. PAINT YELLOW AND GREEN HEARTS. LET DRY!
  13. PAINT BLUE AND AQUA HEARTS. LET DRY!
  14. USE WHITE 1-SHOT SIGN PAINT TO PAINT ANOTHER LAYER ON THE LETTERING.
  15. FINISH BY PRINTING OFF THE PHRASE WITH A VINYL PRINTER AND PLACE ON SIGN.

TIPS AND TRICKS:

  1. MAKING A SIGN IS ALL ABOUT BEING PATIENT, DON'T RUSH, LET THE PAINT DRY FOR AT LEAST 12 HOURS
  2. WAX PENCILS ARE NOT PERMANENT
  3. WET SIGN PAINT CAN BE REMOVED WITH PAINT THINNER
  4. IF SOMETHING ISNT PERFECT, LET IT DRY AND PAINT OVER IT.

Materials 12/1/22

-Baby Powder

-White wax pencils

-Scotch tape

- Number 2 pencils

Steps:

First, we put baby powder on the back of our enlarged printed-out prototype and then flipped it over to line up on the wood. Then we traced the letters so the baby powder would be in the place of the prototype.
