Statement of Purpose

The 2018 EPICS team is currently designing a multipurpose Pop-Up Shop that could be used by both students and adults within the Foxcroft community. The goal is to provide a fun, transportable, and interactive station to liven up events both on and off-campus. We hope this will give clubs and other organizations an opportunity to get more involved in hosting giveaways and other surprise activities throughout the school year.

Stakeholders and Requirements

The Pop-Up shop will be available through the Office of Student Life for community members to reserve. Its primary function is to offer free goodies, such as lemonade or hot chocolate, and small activities, such as face-painting or a photo booth. These surprise appearances of the Pop-Up Shop should brighten up our students' and faculty members' days. It is designed to be whimsical, cheerful, and embody the spirit of Foxcroft.

Duration of the Project

The Office of Student Life would like to introduce the Pop-Up Shop to the Foxcroft community at the beginning of November— to be right in line with the month's theme, "Trail Magic." While this project will be delivered at that time for immediate use, there will be opportunities to possibly add onto or expand on the physical structure and to make interchangeable decorations for it at later dates.

Prior Art

Why do these designs not fit the needs of our stakeholder?

The Office of Student Life is looking for something easily transportable, requiring just two people to move it around campus efficiently and to also load it onto a truck bed if needed off-campus. It will have to fit through doorways and possibly an elevator for basement storage. The materials should be lightweight, it should be easy to steer, and there should be enough space for storing items while transporting. The shelving needs to be interchangeable to offer a variety of size and shaped objects for display.

Design Phase 2: Specification Development

TEAM 1

Design Specifications (Project Leader)

We were tasked with creating a pop up shop that was simple, functional, and that would serve the community, while still maintaining an air of "whimsy" to continue the trend of trail magic. Our team's pop up shop design combined elements from each of our original prototypes. We incorporated Georgia's concept of expandable flaps for display space and a large base for central storage. We also used Lizzie's idea of a collapsible awning with some adjustments to fit our new design. The bold signage on the front of the shop was carried over from my design.

Several new additions were brought into this design concept as well. For example, we added a built in slot on the top of the counter to run an extension chord to a surge protector, which are both stored in the interior to be protected from the elements. This will allow the cart to be easily connected to a power source if needed. We also worked on a new aesthetic to blend both wooden and metal features. We aim to deliver a singule structure that has the most versatile features for the Foxcroft School Pop-up Shop.

Design Inspiration

Many of the visual aspects of our design were inspired by the following examples. We combined these with our own ideas to best align with our sepcifications including a large central storage space, a collapsible awning, and lightweight metal design features.

Formal Requirements (Team Role: Financial Officer)

For the front of the shop, we chose a herring bone wood pattern to give the shop that rustic, mystical feel. The side flaps are lightweight, hinged metal pegboards, which can be setup in many different ways. A fox and hound will be lasercut out of sheet metal and attached to the pegboards to represnt the spirit of Foxcroft. The underside of the shop was left open to allow for a diverse variety of uses and storage.

Both the awning and cabinets will be made of thin corrugated metal, which is very weather resistant will help reduce the weight. The 360 wheels with breaks allows easy movement and it can be locked into place. Since the cart is intended to move off campus, we offered a more convenient transport with fewer moving parts to keep track of and an entirely collapsible roof system.

Functional Requirements (Team Role: Construction Manager)

The overall dimensions of the pop up shop will be 70 inches high, 54 inches wide, and 24 inches deep. The proportion of our prototype is scaled for 1 inch to equal 6 inches.

The pop up shop will easily be transportable, with a removable awning to save space and allow for only two people for setup. Blocks are set inside of the cabinet space to stop the wooden posts from being too long to remove. This allows the popup shot to be efficiently assembled. The corrugated metal as the roof allows it to be study and any rain will fall off due to the angle. The peg board wings will be able to swing open and closed with a latch on the side to secure it and a stopper on the bottom corners as well. A hook can be used to hang a small framed chalkboard for various signage.

This simple, versatile design will benefit the numerous different people who will potentially use this cart.

TEAM 2

Design Specifications (Team Role: Project Leader)

Our team's pop up shop design features a two-cart system with the potential to add future carts. They offer the choice to either sit with a bar stool or stand when being used. The drawer cart has two large drawers, one of which will have insulating material. The open cart has a removable magnetic chalkboard and open space inside with pegboards to hold shelves. The removable awnings on both carts are cloth with a plastic top offering some protection from the sun and rain.

Design Inspiration (Team Role: Investigative Tech)

Our final design requires storage space, mobility, and more versatility than these images represent, but the examples had specific aspects that we carried over to our design.

Formal Requirements (Team Role: Financial Officer)

Our design is consisted of two small carts. They can be used independently or connected due to the different needs. The first cart contains a magnetic board, to which the club leaders can draw pictures or put their magnetic logo on it as they need; additionally, at the side facing the sellers, we chose to put pegboards inside, and we will put a shelf on the pegboard to replace drawers, which can be a weight problem, for storing tools.

For the second cart, we put a"trail magic" banner at the front, and it represents the theme of our school. At the back, there are two drawer-like spaces. The upper one is insulating space for icy food and beverages, and the lower one is a drawer for clubs' needs. We will also make awnings collapsable in case the stakeholders do not need the awnings sometimes.

For both of the carts, we decide to use wheels that are made of rubber and have brakes so that it increases stability. We also decided to use the table cloth, which is water-proof, to be our awnings.

Functional Requirements (Team Role: Construction Manager)

The overall dimenstions of each cart is 24 in. deep, 30 in. wide, and 72 in. tall. The proportion of our prototype is scaled for 1 inch to equal 6 inches.

The pop up shop moves on four mounted wheels, each of which rotates 360 degrees and can brake to make it easy to transport and park safely. A student should pull a cart using the handle on the side. The carts also have hooks so they can be linked together. The carts can be separated and lights can be strung between them to create a more intimate and whimsical space. All of the decorations and removable awnings can be stored in the drawer cart. Users can arrange the shelves as needed using the peg board system in the open cart for additional storage. The chalkboard sign is removable with Velcro attachments to make it easy to design and hang. All of these aspects make the design incredibly versatile and easy to setup.
