Medication

Administration of Medications:

Students are not permitted to carry medication on their person at school. Medications should be taken at home not during school hours. If there are extenuating circumstances in which a student does need to take medication at school, the proper form must be completed. Medication forms are current for only one school year. New forms must be completed at the beginning of each school year.

Some medications are not school appropriate. These would include medications containing alcohol, nicotine, or narcotics. (examples: Nyquil, Nicorette gum, Vicodin, Tylenol #3, Percocet.) For student safety, students should not attend school after major surgery while taking narcotic pain medication.

Prescription Medication:

Medication should be given outside of school hours whenever possible. If the student requires prescription medication during the school day, both the parent and the physician must sign a prescription medication form. The medication must be in the original container. The original container must be labeled with a prescription label including the student's name, medication name and medication dosage. The label MUST match the order. All medications must be brought to the school in the original container by the parent. Asthma inhalers and Epi-pens may be self-carried by the student (if approved by doctor) with a completed self-carry form. Students may not self-carry any other medications.

*If medications are prescribed for three times a day, we recommend students taking it before school, after school, and before bed

Over-the-Counter Medication:

By completing the over-the-counter medication form on InfoSnap, parents can give their consent for the school nurse or other non-medical school personnel to provide their child with the following medications if needed: Acetaminophen (generic for Tylenol), Ibuprofen (generic for Advil or Motrin) or antacid. The directions on the bottle will determine dosage of each medication. These medications are to be used for the occasional use and will be administered at the nurse's discretion. These are the only over-the-counter medications provided by the district. Consent by phone is not accepted. If your child needs to take any other over-the-counter medication during school, please speak with your child's school nurse.

*The school district has the right to determine if a medication is appropriate for use in the school environment.

**All forms are valid for one (1) school year**
