TXT0 (Textbook Cost Zero)

What is TXT0?

The TXT0, or Textbook Cost Zero, course marking indicates classes where students will not be required to pay for any course learning materials. Course learning materials include textbooks, readings, workbooks, lab manuals, access codes, or other content. Equipment, tools, or supplies needed to apply the learning occurring in the class are not considered course learning materials.

TXT0 classes may rely solely on Open Educational Resources (OERs) or utilize a combination of OERs, freely available web resources, library resources, and/or faculty-authored materials.

Visit our FAQ page to learn how to designate your course as TXT0 (for instructors) and how to find TXT0 classes (for students and instructors). Still have a question? Drop us a line on our Contact Us page.

What shouldn't be used in a TXT0 class

Any copyrighted materials that lack an open license, are used without permission, or are used in a manner not in compliance with fair use as described in Section 107 of the Copyright Act.

All copyrighted materials used in TXT0 classes should be openly licensed, be authorized for instructional use through an institutional license (e.g. online library resources), be determined to be a fair use, or have the explicit permission of the copyright holder for use in the classroom. Non-compliance may be copyright infringement and subject to legal and/or financial penalties.
