Congratulations to 2021 Open Educator Award Winner, Ashley Biddle!

Since 2017, Ashley's commitment to the creation and use of OER in her courses has reached more than 684 students and saved them over $81,000. The sheer amount of students Ashley has impacted is impressive, not only through her use of OER, but in terms of remixing texts, materials, and Laulima lesson pages for PSY 100, PSY/WS 202 and PSY 240 courses. She has also adapted the content to use examples from the Pacific Islands. Where students were once overwhelmed with reading from just a textbook and not very engaged, students are now reading, watching, and engaging with the OER materials, and grades and retention has improved! In addition, her leadership efforts have contributed to the expanded use of OER through the lecturer pool. We salute Ashley on her continued OER efforts as this year's Open Educator award recipient!

Congratulations to 2020 Open Educator Award Winner, Tasha Williams!

Tasha Williams

Tasha Williams has demonstrated a high level of sustained commitment to Open Educational Resources (OER) in the classroom and at the UH System-level. She co-authored the OER textbook, English Composition: Connect, Collaborate, Communicate, for ENG 100 created during a UH System supported intensive three-day book sprint in Summer 2019. The estimated cost savings for her students through the adoption of OER is $15,308 since Spring 2018.

OER has been a catalyst for her in the teaching and learning process. In her ENG 100 classes, students design their own college success chapter, create content by writing original group essays on college success topics, incorporate and cite research, and share accompanying presentations with the class. Due to this experience, students take more ownership of their assignment and have begun remixing the assignment to go above and beyond the requirements, creating videos, extending the lessons for more videos, and teaching their classmates through their own experiences and creation of original activities. Tasha is a member of the OER Campus Committee and she was a recipient of the 2019 LDORA award.

Congratulations to 2019 Open Educator Award Winner, Michael Cawdery!

Michael Cawdery

Michael has designated two (2) of his classes at TXT0 (Textbook Cost: $0). He has reached more than 500 students, saving them over $50,000.

As part of his dissertation and a Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant with Leeward CC’s Associates in Arts in Teach (AAT) program, Michael facilitated the creation of the OER website, Highlighting Effective Teaching Strategies Video Library. With permission of students, parents, teachers, and administrators, the project visited over 30 classrooms and recorded more than 55 lessons in public and private charter schools over an 18-month period. The website was a collaborative project between Michael, local education agencies, and David Fry who helped with the video and technical aspects of the project. The video library is designed to bring real-world examples and models of effective teaching practice to pre-service and in-service teachers.

Congratulations to 2018 Open Educator Award Winner, P. Jayne Bopp!

P. Jayne Bopp

Jayne has designated eight (8) of her classes as Textbook Cost: $0. She has saved students over $132,600.

Jayne's OER journey included adopting an existing open textbook and openly licensing resources for four classes. She created two new resources where none existed before and openly licensed this content for others to use. Jayne created an OER activity for Sociology of the Family by adapting existing OER, applying a Creative Commons license to it, and sharing the modified OER in the UH OER Repository. Jayne also shared her experiences in a video produced by the Educational Media Center (EMC) and served as a guest speaker on a panel with Michelle Igarashi. Both videos are posted on the EMC YouTube channel. Finally, Jayne participated in an OpenStax pilot test for Concept Coach, a homework tool for their introduction to sociology textbook. Jayne is a true champion for OER at Leeward. Congratulations, Jayne!
