Hairspray Costume and Make-Up Information

Notes for everyone: Read through your character’s costume Google presentation can be overwhelming).

Then, think about whom your specific character is and what might they wear.  The time period is the 1960s. There is a lot of flexibility in the costume choices but keep the colors in mind and try to stay in the color scheme. Have fun creating your character’s costume!! See what you can do. There are all sorts of thrift stores out there or there might already be something perfect in a closet at home. (Ask before you take it though. :) )  If you have trouble finding something or you are not sure about something, let us know.  Hint: Parents often like to help with things like this. Ask them!

Some costume pieces will be provided and those are either mentioned in the notes below or, if we find something, we’ll let you know.  Please let us know if you’d like to look through the costume closet at school as there may be a couple of pieces (especially for the ensemble adults) in there.

        Time period: The 1960s.

This is a really fun opportunity to create your own costume for your character.   Have everything ready to go by Monday April 11th and try to let us know before this if you run in to any problems.

MAKEUP: (link to doc)

For makeup, each actor will need a makeup kit to be applied at home and then touched up at school (many cast members like to put it on at school, which is fine too).  Please utilize what you have at home or purchase inexpensive brands (ELF is available at Target or something similar) if you do have to purchase anything.

Basic Stage Makeup Kit Needed By All Cast Members (Boys and Girls):

  ·       Foundation-one shade darker than your child’s skin tone. You will also need make-up sponges or brushes for foundation application.

·         Powder-same shade as foundation or translucent/no-color –brush to apply

·         Blush- choose a rosy natural tone, nothing too dark or orange and a medium sized, soft bristled blush brush

·         Eye shadow- neutral matte eye color (some blue or pink could work to give an 60s vibe, especially to be added on for finale)…just girls

·         Eyeliner-Dark brown or black pencil eyeliner (all cast members)

·         Eyebrow pencil- brown will work unless your brows are very dark…just girls

·         Lip Color-Pale peach/pink or other neutral lip color…just girls

·         Black mascara- just girls

·         Cotton Swabs and cotton squares for touch-ups and corrections

**Place everything in a labeled  Ziplock bag (or small make-up pouch that you already have) and label everything with your child’s name. **

Optional:

Non-oily makeup remover or wipes

Basic Stage Makeup Application Instructions

1. Wash your face.

2. Apply Foundation: Choose a foundation that gives good coverage and is one

shade darker than your natural skin tone. This may look dark, but

under stage lights you will look normal to the audience. Start the foundation

at the forehead and blend up to the hairline. Then cover the rest of the face,

including ears, eyelids, under the chin and on the neck with a sponge or your

fingertips. Be sure to apply on the neck to the point where your costume will

come. This includes the back of your neck that will show (if you have your

hair up). Tip: work one area of the face at a time.

3. Blush: Choose a natural rosy blush. Start high on the cheekbone, push up into

the hairline, then bring forward. Boys should also use blush, but it should be

a little lighter than girls. Tip: Do not bring blush all the way to the front of the

face. Keep it high on the cheek.

4. Eyes: Use a neutral/flesh tone matte eye shadow (NO SHIMMER, but blues or pinks can be used for Dynamites or finale) on your lids and brow bone area. Line the upper and lower lids with black or brown liner. Girls should curl lashes and apply one coat of mascara to upper lashes.

5. Eyebrows: This is as important as any make-up step and is often missed. Use

a brown eyebrow pencil to darken the eyebrows. Tip: Apply backwards on

eyebrow hair, then follow the natural brow line, don’t come down too far.

6. Lips: Line the lips with a natural color lip liner. Choose a natural lip color that

would look like a person’s natural lip color. Peaches, light pinks, mauves and

nudes work well. Apply lipstick.

7. Powder: To finalize your look and keep everything in place, finish with a

translucent powder (preferably loose powder). Tip: Apply using a large brush

and a light touch.
