Discovery

Ensuring users access the resources they need by enhancing discovery and increasing accessibility of collections

Discovery Systems

  • Discovery systems enable users to find the most appropriate content available

  • Discovery systems are integral to maximising the value of Library & Archives collections

  • Metadata from discovery systems is made available for harvesting by others in the Library community

  • Discovery systems utilise linked data functionality to enhance search results and make resources easier to find

Discovery via digitisation

  • University of York Library users will have access to as much digitised content as possible to enhance current academic activity

  • Registered users with specific needs are supported by a digitisation service

  • All formats (print, audio, still or moving images) are eligible for imaging

  • Imaged materials will have appropriate metadata to enable search and retrieval, and this should include a link from the original print item to the surrogate

  • Digitisation and subsequent distribution of the digital material takes place as permitted by UK copyright law or through a licence agreement with the rightsholder

  • Where licenses permit, digitised materials are made available via the University supported online platforms

  • High-use, rare or fragile print material is preserved from further degradation by providing and managing digital surrogates

  • Material which does not require preservation, but is important because of its local, national or international significance or its relevance to teaching and research, is eligible for imaging

  • Imaged materials are made available for reuse by third parties under an open (Creative Commons) License, wherever this is appropriate and legally possible

  • Materials which the Library does not own but which are in its long-term care may be eligible for imaging

  • Digital surrogates remain the property of the University
