Workshop 6 & Research Meeting: Copenhagen

The 4th SeaChanges Workshop took place face to face in Copenhagen, running from Monday 4th

April-Wednesday 6th April 2022.

Delays

The workshop was originally scheduled to take place in March 2022 but was moved to April 2022

to allow the most people to attend.

Attendees

Morten Olsen (University of Copenhagen) was hosting the workshop and was present for all

sessions, as was David Orton, the Project Coordinator, and Catherine Taylor the Project Manager, both from the University of York.

All 15 ESRs were present for the Workshop.

Content

The original remit of the workshop was as follows:

Workshop 6: public outreach and media communication. This workshop introduces the participants to outreach and media communication through a series of lectures, case studies and hands-on exercises on how to communicate science to non-expert audiences, design teaching activities (e.g. lab experiments) for school and high-school students, prepare podcasts and videos,

interact and disseminate via social media, write effective press releases and deal with the press and the public in science communication. “

Social activities were planned for each evening to allow for maximum networking.

Timetable

Day 1: Monday 4th April

Most of Day 1 was spent covering sessions around communication to the public through different media

platforms. The last session of the day was a case study involving complex issues on Narwhal hunting in Greenland.

Evening Social Event - The day was concluded by a group dinner at Mother in the old meatpacking district of Copenhagen.

Day 2: Tuesday 5th April

Most of Day 2 was spent covering Stakeholder communication. In the afternoon the group had a guided tour of the National Museum of Denmark by Martin Appelt, which included the Arctic Indigenous Artifacts collection.

Evening Social Event - The day was concluded by a group dinner at Vaekst.

Day 3: Wednesday 6th April

Most of Day 3 was spent on Museum and public outreach. The day started with a tour of the Zoological Mueum's collections and exhibits. The Museum has around 14 million specimens ranging from Whales to microscopic organisms.
