Workshops & Meetings

SeaChanges Workshop Schedule

6 Workshops are planned as part of the SeaChanges programme:


  • Workshop 2: Sourcing, identifying, and sampling archaeological specimens: field sampling techniques & their implications; storing, transporting, and archiving samples; sourcing samples from local and national collections; fish bone identification; choosing appropriate samples; practical, legal, and ethical issues in sampling natural and cultural heritage material.


  • Workshop 3: Marine ecology: introduction to the scientific conceptual principles that govern the dynamics and management of marine ecosystems, an overview of research methodology and hands-on training in a suite of methods used to collect and analyse samples and data on marine organisms and the marine environment.


  • Workshop 4: Data management and open science: principles of data management; reproducibility and Open Science; digital repositories for genomic and archaeological data; training in key tools including GitHub for collaborative version control and basic UNIX scripting for data access.


  • Workshop 5: Archaeology and marine wildlife conservation: this workshop will introduce the goals and methods of marine conservation, explore the potential of archaeological data to inform conservation science, and educate archaeologists regarding how to enhance the relevance and visibility of their research to stakeholders and policymakers


  • Workshop 6: Public outreach and media communication: this workshop introduces the participants to outreach and media communication through a series of lectures, case studies and hands-on exercises on how to communicate science to non-expert audiences, design teaching activities (e.g. lab experiments) for school and high-school students, prepare podcasts and videos, interact and disseminate via social media, write effective press releases and deal with the press and the public in science communication.

Official Meetings

As part of the SeaChanges programme there are 5 official 'whole network' meetings:

  • Kick Off Meeting - at the start of the programme, once all the ESRs are recruited, a 'kick off' meeting takes place to launch the network- with all ESRs and Supervisors invited, along with representatives from the Partner organisations. The kick off meeting is attached to the following workshop:


  • Mid Term Meeting - 6-8 months after the ESRs are recruited, an official meeting takes place with a representative from the European Commission and the Network, to review progress and ensure the programme is working effectively. The mid term meeting is attached to the following workshop:


  • 3 x Research Meetings: Research Meetings are for the ESRs to formally present on their research thus far, and for any follow up discussions to take place as a group. Research meetings are attached to three of the scheduled workshops:


Final Conference

At the end of the programme there will be a final conference:
