The 3rd SeaChanges Workshop took place face to face in Oslo, running from Monday 11th - Friday 15th October 2021.
Delays
The workshop was originally scheduled to take place in October 2020, alongside the Mid-Term Meeting.
Due to Covid-19 we decided to postpone the workshop, but keep the Mid-Term meeting in October 2020 (which ran online).
Bastiaan Star (University of Oslo) was hosting the workshop and was present for all sessions, as was David Orton, the Project Coordinator, and Nell Booker, the Project Manager, both from the University of York.
We ran the event in a hybrid format - with most attendees meeting in person, in Oslo, and some joining online via Zoom.
13 ESRs agreed to attend in person, 2 online. Supervisors were invited to attend the research meeting (Monday and Tuesday) - 21 Supervisors attended over the 2 days; 8 in person and 13 online. We limited the in-person attendees to ensure we could allow for sufficient distancing in the room, as a Covid-19 precaution.
The original remit of the workshop was as follows:
“Workshop 4: Data management and open science: principles of data management; reproducibility and Open Science; digital repositories for genomic and archaeological data; training in key tools including GitHub for collaborative version control and basic UNIX scripting for data access. “
There was some pre-reading for the workshop, and each ESR had to prepare a presentation covering their progress to date and next steps, to be shared at the research meeting. Each ESR was allowed 20 minutes, 12-15 minutes to present and 5-8 minutes for a follow up Q&A session.
Social activities were planned for each evening to allow for maximum networking.
Most of Day 1 was spent covering ESR presentations.
During the Q&A at the end of each presentation, the ESRs were asked to invite feedback from the audience on particular aspects of their work, or things they needed assistance on.
The ESRs also informally peer reviewed each other’s presentations, giving quick feedback via anonymous cards - a green card for a positive observation and a pink card for constructive feedback (each ESR provided one of each for each presentation).
Evening Social Event - Most of the afternoon was spent on a research trip, to two museums: the Viking Ship Museum and the Fram Museum. The evening was spent dining on the Fram ship
Day 2 of the Research Meeting focused on the remaining ESR’s presentations.
Once these had concluded the Supervisors departed.
In the evening the group met up for a casual dinner, followed by an optional excursion to a traditional Norwegian Fjord Sauna, which was attended by the majority of the group.
Day 3 was the first day of the workshop, and the whole day focused on a demonstration and hands on session, exploring new software that has been co-designed by one of the ESRs in the SeaChanges group, Lane Atmore (ESR 3) and Bastiaan Star (PI for Oslo and Workshop Lead).
Evening Social - The group dined out at the Nedre Foss Gard
Day 4 was split into two halves - the morning was spent with Esther Plomp who joined the workshop in person to deliver a session on Open Science and Github.
The afternoon session was run by Eric and Sarah Kansa from one of our Partner Organisations, the Alexandra Archive Institute, who joined us from California via zoom to talk through Data Management and Data Management Plans.
Evening Social - The group dined at an Italian restaurant
On Day 5 the students participated in a session on reviewing manuscripts.
An experienced academic author and reviewer, Micah Dunthorn, talked through best practice and showcased an example for the students to work through.
