As part of the workshop, we will organise a PhD Poster Competition to celebrate the research of our early-career participants and encourage the development of effective scientific communication skills.
The competition will take place during the poster session on Tuesday 15 September. A jury of senior academics and an expert in science communication will visit the posters and assess both the scientific content and how effectively the research is communicated.
Each participant will have 5 minutes to present their poster, followed by up to 3 minutes for questions and discussion. The jury will consider:
Scientific content: the quality, originality and significance of the research presented;
Poster communication: the clarity of the central message, structure, accessibility and appropriate level of detail;
Oral presentation: clarity, organisation, engagement and effective use of the five-minute time limit;
Questions and discussion: understanding of the research and ability to respond clearly and thoughtfully to questions;
Visual communication and design: readability, layout, visual hierarchy, typography, and the effective use of figures, diagrams and other visual elements.
The winner will receive a £100 prize, together with a certificate recognising their achievement. The form of the prize will be confirmed shortly.
Best of luck to all participants!
Some useful resources on scientific poster design and communication:
A huge congratulations to Sofie Ried, who has been awarded the prize for the PhD Poster Contest with their poster, “Unitarity in minisuperspace models”!
The competition showcased the excellent research being carried out by the participating PhD students, as well as their ability to communicate their work clearly and engagingly to a broad audience. The quality of all the contributions was outstanding, making the selection of a winner by the members of the jury a particularly difficult task.
Many thanks to Dr. Eleni-Alexandra Kontou, Prof. Nicola Pinamonti, and Dr. Daan Janssen for agreeing to serve on the jury for our PhD Poster Contest, and for the time, care, and dedication they brought to the judging process.
Congratulations to Sofie Ried, and many thanks to all the students who took part and shared their research with us!
