I felt a pressure to perform higher as a female in a more male-dominated subject. It felt like you had to compensate in the complete opposite direction, like your place there was earned by being better than all males. This is not the case for all faculty but I did experience the feeling that if I wasn't the best then I wasn't worth their time.
I have however also experienced positive discrimination based on gender, where I felt a faculty member gave me preferential treatment.
Some of these things may be aggravated by self. They came from very real examples, but once the thought is planted it is hard to shift even if opinions change.
